well if these bellwether counties are such reliable predictors, why does it start with reagan? shouldn't it go back a century or mnre?
i'm not researching all those counties going back to, say roosevelt, but my guess would be this "fact" works from reagan forward (and again, even then, half the time they aren't 100%), but falls apart with carter, nixon, etc. they're nothing more than a mildly interesting coincidence
but muh bellwether counties!!!1!!

I'd guess the pattern with those counties was established when "Reagan democrats" fled democrats' anti-Americanism, but that's just a guess.
