He did not become the commander of the ANV until Joe Johnston was wounded at Seven Pines. He was a military advisor to Jeff Davis until Davis promoted him on the field after Johnston was wounded.

The confederacy was no longer a part of the Union.
So it was false as written.
It is completely evident that the states who seceded were no longer part of the Union, because each of them had to be readmitted to the union after the war.

Yup. Look at Lee peacefully surrendering before spending his final years preaching unification and using his status as a southern icon to promote peace and patriotism in his fellow southerners.

Sherman wasn't a good general.
He had 2.5 times the men and cannons as his opponents. Any boob can win with his advantage.
Really?
Then why did McDowell, McClellan, Pope, Burnside, Hooker, Banks, Rosecrans, etc. all fail to subdue the Confederacy in their areas of operation?
I'll wait for your informed reply.

Why can't you just get over it. You weren't there, you didn't fight in the war. Let it go. Move on.

Personally I think that you are the most accurate poster on this board in regards to the war. You post historical facts and anyone that really know's anything regarding the war realizes that when you post those facts. Sherman was indeed a unique character. He would fight you to the death in regards to secession and he never changed until Johnston and Breckinridge met with him to surrender at Durham Station. But when the fighting ended he offered even more favorable terms to Johnston than even Grant did to Lee. Johnston and Breckinridge were astonished at Sherman's terms. They never had a chance of being accepted by the radicals in Washington and they criticized Sherman harshly. They even accused him of wanting to march his army on D.C. To initiate a coup against the government. Which was rediculous. But that being said, Sherman did make three potential blunders before Atlanta fell and should have been punished if not for the in- fighting and backstabbing among the Confederate Army of Tennessee command. Hardee personally screwed up big time at Peach Tree Creek and at The Battle of Atlanta. After Atlanta fell, Sherman faced minimal token resistance from Wheeler's cavalry and old men and boys in the home guard. Sherman did make tactical mistakes. Atlanta falling was the pivotal point in that war IMO. Not Gettysburg. IMO Grant was a better strategist than Sherman. Grants Vicksburg strategy was sound and one of the best carried out during the war. Grant's bulldog tenacity and willingness to take on casualties in the Overland Campaign, plus his sheer superiority in numbers and resources finally won out. He targeted destroying Lee's ANV ability to maneuver and to fight. His goal unlike the others that you mentioned focused on destroying the ANV through attrition instead of taking Richmond. Lee simply could not sustain efficient numbers to defend the line from Petersburg to Richmond. Grant's vastly superior numbers could simply continue to overlap him on the flanks. Lee could not break out to maneuver and the end result was inevitable.

Too bad he choose poorly when it came to what side to fight on when America was being existentially threatened.
"Existentially".... not really...
Robert E Lee was from Virginia... Not sure he thought he had much choice...

Because they wouldn't use the men at their disposal and failed to follow up the few victories they had.
