why shouldn't they be allowed to advertise?

They banned cigarette commercials, big pharm is just as bad as big tobacco.

If we could somehow get feminine product commercials in this net it could be a win/win for the world.

Should be outlawed. The need to pay for these huge advertising campaigns by pharmaceuticals is the reason the cost of medicine is so high compared to other countries.

I get why people hate big pharma, but is advertising medicines that might actually help certain ailments in the same as category as advertising cigarettes?

The treatment for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, infectious disease, and many other illness has improved dramatically. To argue otherwise is disingenuous.
I agree with cancer and infectious disease. For diabetes and CVD, I would argue the drug industry is actively doing harm to the population.

I could just be old fashioned and out of touch. But I go to my doctor for him to diagnose what is wrong with me and for him to prescribe what will fix the problem. Not me seeing an ad on TV and going to him asking him if he will prescribe this to me.

How many journals do you read? Do you have a background in the field to make this judgement?

Pharmaceutical ads are truly annoying, especially to doctors

My wife works in the medical field, and every doctor in her company HATES the pharmaceutical reps. A couple of the doctors have even told the reps they don't write prescriptions based on anything they tell them or bring them.

I wouldn't ask my doctor to prescribe one of those drugs to me either without getting his input first.

I'm in favor of patients educating themselves and seeing commercials for drugs should prompt people to do some research into it themselves as well as asking their doctor.

No it shouldn't be! Advertisement is the dissemination of information and the raising of awareness. I don't want the government assuming my level of ability to use information and process it. I DO want to have the information so I can make better decisions about options and alternatives.

You have that ability in the palm of your hand all day long. No one is suggesting that you can't look up different drugs to treat a condition you have.

Big pharm has found a way to pump themselves into your home all day everyday and they love it.

NO. I don't have the ability to look up drug information if I'm not even aware of their existence. YMMV!

Describe how this takes place currently. How do pharma companies payoff docs?

Do you think he direct to consumer marketing of drugs be allowed or should it be relegated to just to healthcare workers since hey are the ones to make diagnoses and prescriptions.

No. Why would you want to receive less information about medicines?

Pharma advertisements are already extremely regulated. Even the names of the drugs are heavily regulated.

We need less regulation by the government, not more.

A doc will prescribe THEIR drug and they get a kickback for it.

I like the disclaimers at the end of the ad where the announcer says REALLY FAST:

'Side effects may be dyspepsia, hepatitis, swollen gums, hair loss, diabetic coma, irritability, or death. If you have any of these symptoms stop using our product.'

They do not. They used to but that practice has stopped. Reps cannot even give pens when detailing their products. That has really pissed our nurses off.

We do not even allow them in the hospital.
