I know someone who was a Philosophy major. He's a pricipal at a private equity firm who makes more money than you or I will ever make

But did the philosophy degree teach the skills that made him valuable?

Your acquaintance is the exception to the rule. I don't beat around the bush with my kids and tell them it will all be sunshine and rainbows if only you follow your heart. I'm too honest and analytical for that crap. I sat him down and showed him that with a technical degree that the opportunities and pay are both higher than that of a philosophy degree. I didn't have to twist his arm.

So you're saying you didn't learn anything about the history of photography?

I learned Barry Goldwater was quite the photographer, actually. LINK

His work has been put on public display. Most of it is candid shots around Arizona.

I am assuming they are lumping my degree in with Misc Biological Sciences but our income corresponds more with the engineering categories. We can make lower paid specialty doctor money if we desire to work residency like hours.

From my experience, unless you have a specialized degree such as accounting, engineering, etc, your actual degree doesn’t matter after your first job or two. It is 90% experience. Hence someone with a political science degree working their way up at a company and becoming a supervisor, sales manager etc… it’s all about job skills. You can also go into the petrochemical industry/industrial side and make a lot of money with a shitty or no college degree at all.

And even though Civil is a little lower on that list, a lot of that is probably government DOT jobs where the job security is off the charts.

They don’t have petroleum engineering on this list…it would be the highest paid out of college.

Nah, aeros passionate about space travel will work for NASA for peanuts, or at least that was true prior to the private space companies. I bet SpaceX still doesn't have to pay top dollar to attract talent, just outpace NASA.

It's extremely rare.

Not true. Most people work in a field unrelated to their major.

“According to recent research, 62% of recent college graduates are working in jobs that require a degree, yet only 27% of college graduates are working in a job that even relates to their major.”

It is likely easier to get there with a better degree, but anyone with the aptitude can succeed. It may just take a bit longer to get there.

Philosophy is something you can learn in the side, while learning something actually useful. Unless you are already wealthy, why pay to learn something with such a limited prospect?
