Why would any country continue to act against its own best interests?

That is a GREAT rhetorical question that should make you think.

...because the answer to the question is, it wouldn't.

Now you have to ask, in whose interests are these trade deals that we have made over the last decades? The answer to that is the powerful interests that control the government. In a system where money equals speech, those with the most money have the most speech, those with little money have little speech. There are powerful interests in this country that have profited enormously from the trade deals we've made.

Why are you side stepping it?

pointing out that a few anecdotes of that, when an ocean of similar decisions happens all the time anyway, is not side stepping anything

more projection

i don't doubt that a few facilities that were on the margin due to lack of competitiveness may happen/survive in a protected environment

i also don't doubt that a far larger field of downstream users, and an even larger field of consumers must be harmed if that tariffs are to have any effect at all

Indeed, they are taxes on the american people.

But so are:

minimum wage laws

regulations

occupational licenses

Where is your outrage at that?

Funny. Democrats are simply against anything Trump does. Even things they would normally agree with like tariffs.

Why aren’t the anti tax people getting excited about this?

Since foreign tariffs on American goods are taxes on American workers, and Trump wants fair, trade I’m good!

Libtards ignore and bias fake news silence the real story. Trump would prefer tariff free trade, but minimally insists upon equal trade.

MAGA!

Kind of like any war, right?

Had we the same attitude after Pearl Harbor, millions of lives could have been saved.
Millions!
Given your reasoning, we should have capitulated on Dec 8th 1941.

We should have understood the consequences retaliatory action would bring to "a far larger field of downstream soldiers, and an even larger field of civilians who would be harmed." WTF were we thinking?

Indeed. So stop twirling. Trump is not the initiator here.
