what really happened was we had a massive increase in crime in the late 1960s, in the 1980s and 1990s they started getting tougher on crime, which brought the rate down.

There is no trend since 2010.

I think it has a lot more to do with demographics. Young men are the crime committers, and we have fewer young men per capita. The trend since 2010 is fairly flat, but at a much lower level than in past decades. There are probably a lot of factors. As you wrote, criminology is one, demographics, technology; it’s hard to tease out exactly what causes it.

Good thing we didn't punish this guy harshly.

This would have upset the likes of progressive women.

Well, at least he only killed just one person.

This is what "winning" looks like if you vote Democrat

Can't do that, it would be raciss.
I'd prefer the use of a guillotine.
The message would resonate better.

You know what? As crazy as it sounds, this scumbag would be bailed out in shitholes like Chicago, Washington D.C. and Minneapolis.

There should be stricter laws against bail bondsman services for certain crimes.

Best advice is to avoid anywhere they are likely to frequent. A dollar general would be ground zero for that particular phylum.

The 2% of 13% continue the crime spree here in our country.

Holding them accountable for their first crime would help. The revolving door is the problem, its the same few people committing most of the violent crime.

Obviously. But by definition, isn’t that already “after” they struck?

Released by WHO? Nothing changes until the judges and DAs responsible for letting this garbage out feel pain.

Agreed.

Or laws are passed on a state level, as there have been in the Carolinas, putting an end to cashless bail and catch and release options for judges and LEOs.

The previous Crime wave from the end of WW1-The Great Depression was easy.

Prohibition was a big part, but looking at New York City, the rate during that time was not significantly different than now.

What stands out is the 1960s spike that was only brought under control in the 1990s.

What happened in the 1960s

Food Stamp Act of 1964
Criminal Justice Act (CJA) of 1964 - federal funding for legal representation for poor defendants in federal courts
Housing and Urban Development Act of 1965
Social Security Act of 1965 - Medicaid
Miranda v. Arizona - 1966
Gun Control Act of 1968 - Severely reduced the number of people who could carry guns legally.

A spike in crime like we had never seen before or since started.

You can't pretend that this was not a direct outcome of Johnson's great society.

In the vast majority of cases, the first crimes are minor.

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/ab.22097
quote:

Farrington et al. (2012) have determined that previous criminal offending was one of the most important risk factors for committing homicide. However, despite the strength of the association between previous convictions and homicide within the literature, homicide offenders without previous convictions are not that unusual; research shows that between a quarter to just under a half of homicide perpetrators had no convictions before homicide (Bennett et al., 2011; Bridger et al., 2017; Cook, 2005; Flynn et al., 2011; Gajic et al., 2016; Rye & Angel, 2019).

So 50-75% have prior convictions.

BUT those without convictions
quote:

various homicide studies have noted the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of homicide offenders without previous convictions. Those without previous convictions were more likely to be women (Trägårdh et al., 2016), kill family members (Cao et al., 2008), or intimate partners (Caman et al., 2017) rather than strangers compared to those with previous convictions. Bennett et al. (2011) found that people with schizophrenia were significantly less likely to have previous convictions compared with homicide perpetrators without schizophrenia.

Only 18% in that study of people who killed a stranger did not have a prior conviction.

But even for others, the rate is very low for killing without a prior conviction.

Offenders with more extensive prior criminal records are more likely to kill strangers, we should not be surprised when this happens.

From the data you posted earlier in this thread, over the last ten years the number of violent victimizations of white people from households earning $75K or better has gone from 758K in 2015 to 1.76 million in 2024.

I'm guessing the majority of posters in these threads fit that profile (white, households $75K+), so that's probably why it "feels" like the frequency of this type of crime is off the charts. It is.
