He says long term tariffs are bad but they are fine if they are a means to an ends.

So they have nothing to do with "bringing jobs back"?

That would fall under the "ends" portion of the comment you quoted. Yes, it will absolutely be bringing jobs back.

VAT's are not the same as tariffs, and shouldn't be included in the discussion.

VATs. Another screw job by the Europeans. The US has been the world’s piggy bank for too long.

How does the European VAT screw Americans on relation to any other country? H

Sowell is on a short list of people I pretty much never disagree with because he can prove he’s right, every time.

If retaliatory tariff threats cause other nations to drop or greatly reduce their tariffs then said businesses could move their production back to the US since said additional costs no longer exist.

The problem is these aren't retaliatory. They are just blanket tariffs based off of an absurd calculation.

VATs increase the price of US products for consumers in other nations, tariffs and VATs are cumulative cost increases on US products.

It affects all consumers in all countries. I was speaking to American goods. Most companies get a tax credit for VATs while consumers do not.

When the other country drops their tariffs and stops manipulating their currency/subsidizing their industries their imports are less competitive and so manufacturing returns.

Ok.

We just imposed import tariffs on commodities we can’t “create” in the US like coffee and bananas. The countries that grow our coffee and bananas are pretty poor and likely aren’t going to be buying our stuff.

So all we’ve done here is raise the input costs on thousands of Americans businesses that take commodities from the countries that have them and turn them into a product Americans enjoy.

Tariffs on coffee beans, bananas, palm oil, mangoes, etc. are taxes. They serve no other purpose than to raise revenue for the government from the American consumer.
