Eh...they’ll get back pay. They already have good pay and benefits. They can handle missing a paycheck they’re gonna receive anyway. I’m more of the kind that the coast guard and other vital security should be getting paid regardless of the shutdown.

By what concept of fairness do you justify a government forcing its citizens to work for an indefinite amount of time (and substantial talks are not even ongoing) without pay?

Shutdowns are bullshite politics anyway, but for those you deem essential enough to work during them, it’s an additional insult to not pay them.

You probably aren't missing anything. Farmers, on the other hand, don't have all of the services available to them with certain agencies within USDA shut down right now. Some hunts on National Wildlife Refuges have been cancelled because they require the presence of USFWS personnel.

They can always quit...no one forces them to work there...

When it's one of the best paying jobs in a small town like I live in, with 3 kids, It's not that easy to just quit. While you are right, no one forces me to work where I do, I feel like I am doing the public a service by keeping murderers behind these fences. People have waited (and continue to wait) years, to be employed where I work. How would you feel if all Federal correctional officers, or border patrol agents, up and quit one day? You think you could make it with convicted child molesters and convicted murderers running around in your neighborhood? Everyone isn't cut out to be a correctional officer, or border patrol agent, I am one of those people that actually like what I do. Don't worry though, even though you're an a-hole, I will still keep the murderers and molesters behind the fence for you while you sleep at night.

I’m an a-hole because I say that I don’t feel bad for workers who took a job, knowing that there is always something the risk of shutdown, and that they will not be paid during that time? I’m sorry, but I would think a little foresight would be in order there.

Don’t act like some martyr when it was a known risk when you took the job. You weighed the options. You like the job, the pay, and the benefits. You took the job.

No one I know is crying. They are either using it as a vacation or working elsewhere making a “bonus”.

They will, and if they are like our agency they get compensated additionally by things like time off awards (which don’t expire and don’t count against your max carryover vacation time).

Directly? Not much.

Indirectly? Not all federal workers are grifters who live in DC, make six figures, take fancy vacations on a regular basis, and look down on everyone else. Some are our neighbors and don't enjoy a significantly higher standard of living.

The latter category might be applying for jobs where they aren't affected by shutdowns, thereby creating more of an employer's market. Not a serious problem but if you're on the lookout for a better opportunity, the offers could be a little lower.

Friend of mine is a guard at a maximum security federal prison. He is required to work and isn't being paid right now.

The coast guard didn't do this EXACT same thing? You're an a-hole because you have no sympathy for people who do a job to protect you and your family, and dont care what kind of financial strain they get put in because of the shutdown. News flash, not everyone has money saved up. I'm 25 with 3 kids. I damn sure live paycheck to paycheck. I drive 1 hour to work one way. Sometimes people have other shite going on also. Everyone wasn't thinking about the government shutdown either, because we have never had one last this long. Like I said it isn't missing 1 paycheck that's hurting. It's missing more than 1. I also have a daughter with a birthday coming up in a few weeks, she will not understand if I say, daddy can't buy you any presents or have you a party, because while I'm having to go to work and be away from you, I'm not getting paid for it.

As I previously stated, sometimes there's not many options around small towns like me. It was either work for the federal prison, or go to CSX where they work you till they don't need you and lay you off. I didn't go to college and get my degree, I was going, but when you have a kid early like I did, and have a job where you have to work until 2 in the morning to make ends meat, college gets put on the back burner. How would you feel if your company ( or wherever you work) said. Well, we don't have any money in the bank account right now, but y'all just keep on working, we will pay you when the money comes in.

Here's a thought, go open you a new savings account, one that you cant touch until we get paid. Take the last 2 checks that you got paid, and put the full amount in it, and every check that you will make gets put on there too until we get our next check. See how long you and your family likes doing that. Maybe then, you can have some perspective on what we are going through, btw we don't get paid the day the government opens back up. We will more than likely have to wait until the next paycheck (which is at least 2 weeks away now)

I went to college working 3 jobs with 2 kids and a wife that didn’t work. I slept maybe two hours a night for years. There’s always a way out of a situation.

If my boss told me that they couldn’t pay me I’d quit. If I couldn’t find another job in my town...I’d move. If I couldn’t/didn’t want to move and couldn’t/didn’t want to quit, I’d find something else to do to make ends meet while I was without pay. I learned long ago that life is a bitch and no one is gonna fix your problems for you.

I included the coast guard simply because they are a branch of the armed forces. They’re the only ones not getting paid.

How are you going to move with no money?

I never said there wasn't, but that shite wasn't for me.

As did I. I dont expect you, or anyone else for that matter (other than the government) to fix my problems. I really don't have any problems, other than not getting a paycheck.

As I stated before though, they signed up for the exact same thing I did, in case you don't know probably 70 percent or more of our staff at the bureau of prisons are former military. It's just coming off to me that you feel as if nothing would change in america without correctional officers, border patrol, or TSA agents. Going by your logic, if everyone quit and moved, people would really start to see a problem in america, because there would be no prisons, no border security, and no security at airports. That my friend is a recipe for disaster. Don't downplay every one else who has important jobs, just because you don't really see them as a necessity. I understand my place, and know I'm not viewed as important as our military officers, and I shouldn't be, but I do go put my life on the line to work around people who have killed cold blooded and would do so again.

Technically, the Coast Guard isn’t a branch of the armed forces (DOD) but the Dept of Transportation.
