He has the accoutrements of a war hero. I am impressed by the official story of his captivity. Many of the counter-arguments to his heroism are interesting, but I have not had the time or interest in researching them. I cautiously celebrate his heroism.
I do not worship him, nor any other human being. Paying respect for good stuff they did in their past should be all the 'repayment' they deserve.
When they enter the political field, it is time to discard the 'past hero' version of anyone. DEMOCRATs certainly never allowed the unchallenged heroism of Bob Dole and GHWBush interfere with their malicious attack on their character. And I don't recall conservatives ever using 'but they were war heroes' in defending them agains political attack.
In McCain's case he became a media darling precisely because he could pull the "Maverick" card when he was called upon to kill some conservative agenda item. His vote against the Obamacare repeal was a malicious act directly intended to deny a Trump agenda item. Something he himself campaigned on, had championed for almost a decade, he voted to kill simply because Trump would have registered an easy 'win' - which would have set up even more winning in subsequent legislation.
This McCain could not allow - his intent was not what was good for Arizona, not good for conservative politics, not good for America - He torpedoed it out of spite and malice.
For that - and numerous other instances, of which this was merely his last - I cannot forgive him.
I will not support disrupting memorial services for this family and friends, but I would not join in unless it was a ceremonial duty.
His last impression left with me is a good man gone bad - a petty political hack with pernicious motives. He is already dead to me.

I sympathize with the mortal man and his family on his impending death.
I proudly proclaim my appreciation for his service in the military.
But, I am happy that a GOPe cuck Senate seat is opening because he did great harm to this nation with his political career. He is a big government GOP tax and spender (this would make him a far right DNCer). For his state and country, he should have resigned a year ago.

For the 1,000,000 time, it wasn't him.
Heck, we thoroughly detailed the Forrestal fire when I was taking Naval ship systems II. Even back in the 1980's, we were taught that it was an electrical failure in a zini rocket on an f4 phantom that caused it launch prematurely. McCain's only part in the incident was his plane was one of the one's struck by the rocket.
The fact they didn't lose the ship was a testimony to Naval command and control. The damage control guys were outstanding. It was the best example of this until the USS Cole wad attacked by AL Qaede in the 1990s.

This thread exemplifies why I loathe modern American liberals, much more than conservatives. In 2002, liberals were anti-war. Bush and McCain were war criminals. Fast forward to 2008. War became acceptable again, because a Democrat was waging it. Not only did wars continue, but drone strikes increased, domestic surveillance increased and our President claimed the right to kill Americans with targeted drone strikes without charge or trial, and with zero opposition from his own party.
Now, the Democrats want a Cold War with Russia. They want regime change in Syria. They lionize sadistic fricks like McCain and have common cause with the Bush-era neocons most responsible for 2 decades of continuous warfare. Liberals, you aren't the anti-war party and you never were. If you really believed in ending wars and not killing civilians in the Middle East, you'd have voted for Ron Paul instead of Obama.
