Well that means we're getting into things like...Social Security, which he was implying we could avoid.

Okay. I didn't read the whole thread.

I agree - we'd have to cut mandatory spending to fix fedgov.

The fat in the US budget is the military.
That's where the cuts could save billions.

Our deficit (it will be bigger next year) was $1.9T
For example, Congress could implement a hard nominal cap/freeze on total outlays X 10yrs. At 4% growth (CBO baseline est) we'd match revenue and outlays in year eight, and begin debt reduction.

It would be odd to get into an area still in surplus, would it not?

Then stop taking SS out of my pay check. I want what I've put in it. If they'd get rid of all the fraud there'd be plenty of money in SS. They should make every person that stole SS money pay it back with interest just like taxes.

Why was that a problem then and the problem isn't that today people retire at the same time they did back then, but live about 20 years longer?

Oh yea, I need to state it clearer, they never planned for people to live longer.

Yea that is sooooo fair to the millions who have been paying into that for 50-60 years . Yea let's just cut it off!! Better yet, let's just take all of the money and funnel it to illegals and politicians!! That seems to be the American way these days.

I don't think paring down our offensive and defensive capabilities to the tune of any appreciable amount is a great idea.

In that regard, better to have and not need than to need and not have.

One would think, as All private biz do is find waste, fraud, and abuse to slim line for profit?

Didn't that happen? Or maybe it didn't. with DOGE?
I mean military is rhe biggest piece of the pie, but yet No audit or checks? You are good with that, year after year? Blame other programs is easier to defer.

DOGE found that there were 7 million accounts that were over 120 years old.

How many of those accounts were actually getting SS dollars?

How many right now are scamming SS?

No. I'm not okay with that.

In my perfect world they'd be required to be good stewards of taxpayer money.

Ok if true. would love the details and if corrupt,
FIX IT, charge them, stop it !

How did the military audit go? It didn't, and will not be addressed and you accept that?

That's where the big money is. Budget, contracts, and lobbiest. You, gladly ignore and whine about SS only?

A far better option to making the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) available to everybody. Most people, even low wage folks would retire millionaires.

That’s precisely why it would never be implemented. Creating wealth for every American would destroy the two party system.

Did you forget the interest on the debt?

I don't think 4% growth (GDP, I presume) would overcome interest compounding on our debt.

We're talking about the total debt, not arguing SS has structural issues.

The plan would be to siphon off tax revenue from SS while maintaining taxing levels.

The revenue has to come from some mandatory program, or, more likely, all of them. There isn't any other way to meaningfully deal with the debt, at this point. Mandatory spending is too large compared to discretionary spending, and we can't grow our way out of the debt issues
