It's just how it is for the VP. They really don't do a whole lot and are mostly in the background. it's not some big scheme they have cooked up

In response to the suggestion that Vance was now being moved to the background to guard him from being tied to the 'right-wing extremism' now in the foreground - for subsequent political expediency, I'm suggesting that JD has inextricably linked himself to Charlie. They were friends. JD made no effort to conceal how highly he regarded Charlie.

That’s a fair interpretation of the OP comment, but I don’t think he meant exactly that. Vance’s style is different than Trump’s. He’s less bombastic and more sophisticated in his presentation.
Trump takes the slings and arrows, but Vance doesn’t disagree with the policies, at least not publicly (except for the Iran bombing).
Vance is more explicative while Trump is more expletive!
Vance is taking a lower profile, the OP suggests, simply to take away the Trump generated heat from him. Basically to keep his powder dry.
BTW, I don’t agree with the OP’s premise. I haven’t seen Vance take a lesser role. Just this past week, Vance sort of took over the microphone from the press secretary during a press conference.

Yes they were close friends, and had similar political and personal views. To say they are inextricably linked seems to be an overstatement. It would only be made by someone who thinks of the link as a negative. Republican voters don’t think this. Many people, maybe most on the right, admired Kirk as well.

That’s why most conservatives don’t understand the point you’re making above. Why would Vance distance himself from Kirk? It’s only in progressive and radical leftist bubbles that Kirk is seen as the devil.
