We had real problems playing the ball out of the back. Costa Rica pressed out CB's while their other forwards cut out passing lanes to the full backs when we tried to push up the field. At the very least we were patient, but we often squandered good opportunities in dangerous with a bad final ball.
What bothered me is that when we (rarely) beat a guy 1v1 we often ended up just passing it backwards anyway. No one is prepared to pass the ball forward into dangerous areas like Donovan.

So who's going to be in Baltimore for the El Salvador game? What's the best place to get tickets in the U.S. Supporters groups (Sam's Army/American Outlaws) sections? I'm scheduled to be in Charm City next weekend, wouldn't mind meeting up with a few USA supporting peeps.

Parkhurst sucks. If Orozco can't play right back, drop either Bruin or McInerney and bring in Evans,

Our spacing all game was weird. We tried to get wide to counteract the Costa Rican press, but in some places the players were too far from one another and in other areas we were too tight. The midfield combo of Mix-Holden-Torres didn't really work that well, though I'm willing to give them another game to work on timing and spacing.
I don't know where Donovan is being deployed. It's like he's a second striker, but I'd rather he was deployed as an AM to help us react to teams that can flood the middle. In that sense his movement would be more horizontal, which can help us get some 2 v 1 opportunities, which we really didn't have.
I don't like this two striker system to be honest. I suppose it is good to work on something just in case but we look so much more fluid and in control in a 4-2-3-1. Granted we don't have anyone to play as a single striker atm other than Jozy, which may be why we are going with the two strikers.

The biggest issue we have is width. If Torres is playing as left mid, we really have three central midfielders, and if Parkhurst plays at right back, we have no offensive play from that position.
I would prefer Corona as the left midfielder, I guess. None of the outside options are particularly good.

Yeah, our shape is rather funky. Hence why I prefer the 4-2-3-1. The double pivot gives much better shape.
We get nothing going forward from the RB, and our LM cuts in, so our shape is certainly lopsided.

Yeah at least that way Donovan can reinforce our attacks from the right,
I really hope we find a right back for the last 2 games.

Our tactics were absolutely awful today IMO. They had 5 flat across the back and 4 flat in the midfield with a constant 20 yards separating them. We should have dropped Donovan into that space instead of having Donovan and Wondo within 10 yards of each other on a flat line. They were making that up way too easy.
I'm really surprised we never made that adjustment.

Maybe they were under strict instructions to partner up? I was confused by that as well. It was like they were playing as two poachers. I think Donovan can be deadly from as a DLF, and I wished he played that way the last couple of games.

Klinsmann is not a tactical genius, sooo....

It definitely seemed like they were instructed to do so. I've never seen Donovan stay so far forward before in a US shirt. Costa Rica was basically begging us to play that space. I noticed a lot of times that Mix would wander off into that space but then Holden would be left alone in the middle. I didn't really like the lineup at all. It just seemed very awkward to me. It wasn't really set up for Mix and Holden to control the game at all. They'd get the ball and their only options would be to pass to a defender or try to hit a long ball over the top or to LD or Wondo's feet who would instantly be surrounded by 2 defenders. I didn't understand what we were trying to do.

There certainly was no rhythm from midfield. The only time we got good chances was when Torres rotated in from the left, but it was rare he had a forward ball to play. I suppose this as much a test for Donovan to play as a striker in a pinch. But he is so much better when he can be involved in midfield build up.
Even on the fly it was like our strikers we not reading the space available. Never have I seen such static movement. It seemed to be only forward and vertical. Rarely did they come back for the ball, or exploit space in an intelligent way.

Yeah, there was absolutely no room. You don't clog up an already clogged back line. Wondo didn't look great but there was absolutely no room. We also handcuffed Mix and Holden who are two of our more creative players. I'm just trying to figure it out.

Well Costa Rica did do a good job pressing. It seemed like we were playing a 4-4-2 but it was almost antiquated in its movement and execution, like something from England in the mid-80s. Hopefully this was an experiment and an outlier.
Posted on 7/16/13 at 10:04 pm to crazy4lsu
Yeah, they pressed well but it's pretty easy to press with we were playing with a 2 man midfield for most of the match. CR is very disciplined defensively, they know what they're doing. We gave them too much help though. This was probably the one game that called for the 4-2-3-1 more than any other
Posted on 7/16/13 at 10:10 pm to hendersonshands
I'm not sure why we don't stick with it, unless Jurgen believes no one other than Jozy can play as a lone striker.
Posted on 7/16/13 at 10:11 pm to crazy4lsu
I think if Jurgen wants to play Holden next to Mix he probably needs to stick Beckerman behind them and play a 4-3-3.

Holden and Mix are perfectly capable of playing enough defense to play in a 4-2-3-1, they just didn't have any outlets except backwards and kick the frick out of it.

This was particularly concerning to me. It's like we forgot how to pass/move and use space to our advantage. Every forward action stagnated right before it got to the final third, and the go to reaction was to pass it backwards and recycle. Holden and Mix couldn't use their creativity with no forwards making intelligent runs. Our wings were SO wide that every ball they managed to center seemed speculative at best.

The more LD is involved the better. He knows how to pass/move/use space better than anyone on this team.
