Sucks for him. His wife is a doctor though so I’m sure they’ll be fine. I used to read a lot of his stuff way back when there weren’t as many people covering the USMNT. The last few years though don’t know if I can say I’ve read anything of his.

Saw this coming when he melted about the other layoffs last weekend. He’ll land somewhere.

Not a fan of Wahl, but being out of work sucks.

Took me three edits to decide what I wanted this to say lol.

I'm sure he'll land somewhere thats wants someone to carry the torch for the women's teams while simultaneously smelling his own farts and trashing anything positive the men's team does....

I didn’t mind him until he started becoming a huge simp for the USWNT. Dude is an odd one.

Same, before I just decided to post the tweet.

Dude is a good writer, his book on Beckham in LA is great. But social media magnified just how thin-skinned he was. I lost all respect for him when he took that random arse shot at Roger Bennett during the world cup.

He just comes off like a bitch.

Link is to an awesome podcast interviewing both Ale Bedoya and Geoff Cameron. They are apparently best friends, which is great since they seems to be polar opposites politically. Both of them rip on Wahl and basically say he’s a total dick and they hate him

Wahl seems like the type of dude who so badly wants to be the hipster sports writer that covers sports that no one else is covering.

You got the impression that once the USMNT hit the big mainstream after Donovan's goal that he viewed himself as the gatekeeper of US Soccer. He was very look-at-me about himself.

He is definitely thin skinned and really didn’t seem like he coped well in the new Twitter age when lots of guys put out better content and analysis for the USMNT as a hobby

What I heard was that he was asked to take a pay-cut on his 350K annual salary and he refused.

So SI management gave him an even bigger pay-cut.

Wahl is refuting that.

quote:

1) I told Maven I was fine taking a 30% pay cut during the pandemic. But it was shameful to try to push through a permanent 30% cut beyond the pandemic.

2) My base salary was far below that, but I got a bonus because my bosses said my work was very good.

3) I write frequently.

He definitely did not write frequently anymore, at least compared to other SI writers.

He actually barely wrote at all outside of transcribing half of his podcasts.

I don't fully believe what this CEO is saying, but I also don't believe Wahl.

I'm not taking a side. I just thought that since one side's take was posted in here, the other side should as well.

Wahl has certainly put some great work out there over the years.

But he hasn't adjusted well to the age of social media and podcasting at all. He has no charisma for TV, and comes off like a whiny douche on Twitter most of the time. He may be the OG, but he's fallen behind to other content producers.

I had to stop reading his Twitter account a few years ago. Instead of useful news, it's all negativity or virtue signaling. He's gone through this odd phase in the last few years where he's become the gatekeeper of US Soccer in his own mind, and he takes shots at people over the pettiest things.
