i think it was just mental

like he was making "Pep" movements and not "German" ones

and he probably has a big head and all that and may have had potential personality issues

Kimmich made like 2 runs inside and nearly scored on one of them . The rest of the time he was on the outside. Do you think he was not instructed to play so offensively?

Cleary Low, tells him to bomb forward sometimes, which I already talked about. But Kimmich still isn't free from blame.

quote:

Kroos was sprinting back because Khedira vacated his space and a center back was in the midfield. That all goes back to how the team was instructed to play.

You are basically saying stuff I already said

It got even worse when Ozil dropped into the midfield two. Bc Kroos was having to cover Kimmich and Ozil's space.

I'm thinking you move Werner to the right and let him run, move Muller to a false 9 where he can create and harry the CBs, let Ozil drift furthest forward of the MF 3 and let Kroos pull the strings. Leave Goretzka covering your CBs when the fullbacks bomb forward. #championship. You have Brandt and Reus to bring on for fresh legs. Still can't believe they left Sane.

I'm huge fan of playing Muller more centrally, let Werner out wide.

That's not bad. It would be a pretty fluid front 3

Good read...

I’d like them to find a way to get Goretzka in the XI or at least as a sub.

And if they’re going to play that high of a line, it can’t be Mats at the back with the Kid roaming up as well. Put Süle in.

Germany should have found the net in the 2nd half (I swore Brandt’s rebound rocket was going in)...but Mexico should have gotten at least one more early on.

Frankly, with Sweden winning today it’s do-or-die on Saturday. Jogi must be smart with his selections.

Glad that SCH now seems to agree with my posts re: Mutti

Great post hendo. But you need a TLDR that just says Germany needs an actual defensive midfielder

One thing Mexico did really well in the first half was pressing German players in particular areas, especially where Mexico would have a numerical advantage. It was a type of zonal pressing, but it was also mostly done from the low block, which prevented Mexico from getting stretched, and prevented Kroos and Ozil from finding space. Against the low block, Ozil likes to drift to wide areas, but the wide areas against Mexico were always occupied.

One thing that could beat zonal pressing like this is to have a ball-carrier who can carry the ball through midfield. I don't know if Germany brought that sort of player. Another option would have been to start out in a three man back line, which would have counteracted the transition phase that followed the zonal pressing. Winning the ball back right after Mexico started its transition would have functioned the same way as a counter-press.

The biggest problem for me is that Kroos and Khedira weren't on the same page. Because they often weren't well-positioned to avoid the zonal pressing, it caused imbalances elsewhere, which were exploited on the counter.

I swear the announcers never said Ozil's name the entire match

Yeah that's a really good point. I thought Germany played into that press by constantly having players moving into that zone and crowding further the already small space

If you want to play Kroos farther up in a more dynamic role, you def need the other CM to sit back.

Good read. I agree with most of what you said.

Sami needs to sit. The spacing needs to improve. They aren't giving Timo a chance to play his game.

I'm not sure about your comments about Hummels and Sule. Yeah, he looked slow, but Sule isn't exactly a burner himself.

At this stage in their careers, Sule is much more athletic and can cover more ground than Hummels. But no, he's not a burner.

Goretzka was the biggest miss for me. I would hope Khedira sits the next match and tactically they built around the Goretzka/Kroos pair in the middle.

I thought Drax would have a better showing, and he did in the second half when it opened up for Germany a bit, but I wouldn't be surprised if he sits as well.

Support. Maybe start Reus over Draxler.
