They are a team that doesn't have standout players outside of Ramsey/Bale/Williams, but they are well-coached and each player buys into the system, understands their roles, and works their asses off for the crest. Tactical discipline, stout defense, and a killer counter. The players also have excellent off the ball movement. I think we could institute this system with the right management.

We basically played like a poor man's version of Wales under Bob Bradley. Unfortunately, we had Ricardo Clark playing in the hole instead of Joe Allen. And instead of Bale leading the line and running the channels, we had Robbie Findley running the ball across the touchline. The goal Hal Robson-Kanu scored today was very similar to the goal Jozy Altidore scored against Spain in 2009.

I'm also enjoying the return of teams employing two center-forwards in their formations. The 4-2-3-1 employed by 90% of teams after 2010 has created some incredibly stale football.

Makes Bob's accomplishments even more impressive.

He's been one of the best defenders in the tourney imo, with the exception of that Vardy goal against England. Also invaluable to that team as a leader.

The 4-4-2 is making a come back this year. I'm not sure how the 2 mids compete against the 3 in the 433, but playing on the counter certainly helps. Those teams have been very fun to watch.

I didn't appreciate Bob until we had Jurgen. What sucks for Bob is that had Jermaine Jones not hurt his leg shortly before the tournament, JJ would have been starting in center mid and not Ricardo Clark.

I remember watching a game featuring Ricardo Clark, and marveling at how the only pass he could make was a horizontal ball across the line to the right back.

The "without Ramsey/Bale/Allen"(I know you said Williams but I think we similar quality center backs. Allen is much better than anyone in our midfield,) part cannot be overstated though.

Northern Ireland was just as organized and compact. So was Albania. So can we be. And are a lot of the time. But to be that compact and disciplined and not just be hemmed into your own half, actually have consistent attacks requires some world class talent that we just don't have

It might be hard for us to admit it but Wales has better players from top to bottom. The midfield duo of Allen/Ledley are better than any duo we can muster. We don't have nearly as many players in the EPL as they do either.

They've played like this for five plus years with the same basic core of players. They make no bones about who they are or what they want to do. We have a slightly different dilemma. We regularly come across countries that force us to break them down. We can't always play on the break like Wales do. That said, the way Wales held possession was better than what we do, which is down to having better players.

The fact that we have to play one style against the minnows and another style against bigger teams means we have to be able to execute two styles at once. That is extremely hard, especially at the international level.

I have no idea if this is a shared opinion or not, but him leading us to the Confed cup final, including advancing out of the group stage which was seen as impossible going into our final game, is the brightest moment of our national team's history.

Even greater than our quarterfinal appearance in the 2002 World Cup.

True, but does Wales not play minnows as well? Wales had Cyprus and Andorra in their qualifying group for this tournament.

Yep. 3-5-2 gives me wood and I wish we would do it. Develop a third CB and do the shite.

Besler and Gonzo can fill that role

That's a good point, and maybe having 3 at the back affords them a lot of opportunity to go forward if they need to. As long as you play a back 4 you have to be slightly more cautious.

Yeah Besler I guess could work. Play Besler-Brooks-Cameron left to right. Fab on one side, Yedlin on the other (as long as we keep Fab on the left). I like it.

Didn't we try the three at the back in a friendly awhile back?

I feel like we did it against Chile. Could be wrong.

I think so, but don't think Brooks or Cameron played in that game. Or at least didn't start. Don't have vivid memories to be honest.

Yeah I have no clue who was back there, if I had to guess it likely wasn't either of those guys
