I fully expect to make at least the quarterfinals in 2022 and 26.

Yeah that is crazy talk.

Is it really, though? Prime Pulisic and Sargent, should have a very good defense, we seem to have a golden age of center mids coming up. Yeah, at this point I'm expecting to make a lot of noise.

You have been putting a lot of hope on his shoulders... You're just setting yourself up for disappointment.
He's not even 18 yet, a lot of weird shite can still happen.

Yes it is. You are talking about two cycles, and a whole lot can happen. It's dependent on too many variables. We should always aim to get out of the group and get a favorable R-16 matchup.

Obviously a lot of things can happen over the next 5-9 years, and a lot of them are bad.

We'll disagree there, Broski.
Considering our group in 2006 was brutal, I expected us to not make the knockout round. Italy won the tournament, and the Czech team that killed us was really good. Losing to Ghana was the real failure of that tournament.
If we had gotten an easier group, we might have even made a run in the knockout rounds. That 2006 team had real scoring problems. It's not a coincidence guys like Altidore and Davies were given looks up top in the next cycle.
I know we were a seeded team going into 2006, but we were clearly the third best team in that group on paper. We shouldn't have finished last, but most people expected us to go out early, and we did.

Why do you keep bringing up Sargent as if he is heir apparent to Luis Suarez? He had a good youth tournament. Nothing more. Quit building yourself up for disappointment. Kid needs another five years of development before we can even really guess his trajectory.

When setting expectations for our World Cup performance, it's always important to remember that the quality of opposition in our way makes a huge difference.
Every time I look at the 2010 bracket it gets more painful, because that's the most favorable path to make a deep run that we've ever had (since 1930, anyways). Ghana, Uruguay, and the Netherlands were in our way as group C winners. Compared to Germany, Argentina, and Spain in our way if we had finished second in Group C.
Hopefully, things will go our way again in an upcoming tournament.

Yeah I'll never count on any youth making it ever.
Expecting us to be among the top 8 teams in the world is crazy talk at this point. We aren't a traditional power, and our youth have a long way to go before we can be considered one. We need to invest in youth like France has done. Their federation run finishing schools seemingly have produced a national team that is 3 or 4 deep. I wish we would just copy that model.

All 3 of these teams are better than us, historically. We wouldn't be favored in either path, regardless of where we finished in the group. Is the first path easier than the second? Arguably, but we wouldn't be favored in either.

Ehhh... I'd argue we're better historically than Ghana.

Of course we wouldn't be favored in either group, but that first group was far more manageable than the second. We wouldn't have had much of a prayer to even beat Germany in 2010, much less Argentina and Spain (again) after them, but beating Ghana and even stealing one against Uruguay was not out of the question for that team. We barely lost to Ghana, and they arguably outplayed Uruguay in that quarterfinal, only losing due to Suarez.
One day we'll have a favorable path like that again, but hopefully a much better team than 2010 to take advantage of it .

Okay I'll concede that.

Ghana has only been to 3 World Cups. They have 1 QF and 1 round of 16 finish. We've played 21 more WC games than them.

They've beaten us 2 out of 3 times in those WCs. That colors my perspective.
I'd also argue that the CAF is a slightly better confederation than CONCACAF.
