I spent 6 weeks in London last summer, at London City college in Islington. Classes ended at noon everyday and we never had class on Friday and only had to go on Thursday 3 times.
It was the best 6 weeks of my life.
Where ever you decide to go, you MUST go to Interlaken, Switzerland, stay at Balmers hostel and go canyoning Chli Schlere. Here's the link.
Canyoning Chli Schlere
We spent time in Italy, Switzerland, Greece, France, and Amsterdam.
The segway tours in Rome are a must, and you can by pass Paris if you don't mind missing the tower and the louvre, the people there suck.
Amsterdam is Amsterdam, basically Bourbon on acid.
If you go to Greece only spend one day in Athens and then go to one of the islands. Mykonos and Santorini are the two most popular, with the latter being more relaxed and Mykonos being the party place.
I can give you TONS of information on all of the above places, as well as the running of the bulls in Pamplona.

Germany is full of Germans.
Not so fast my friend. Have you seen their national team? While their society is not the same demographically as their soccer team, they still have tons of non-Germans.

Thanks for the information. I've really wanted to go to Switzerland. I can do without France. I've heard about the people there.
I'd really like to visit Rome, Amsterdam, Athens, Mykonos, and I really heard if you have time on a trip to Europe, Istanbul can be a pretty cool place to check out.

I'd say in order -->
Germany
Netherlands
England
Germany and Neth are far and away to choices because of their location on the continent and Bonn is a very central. You should explore central Europe (Cech, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Bosnia, and Croatia to name a few)
The bad rap on the French is somewhat deserved, but mostly coming from fanny-pack tourists who have only visited Paris and never once even try saying "Bonjour." I've had good and bad experiences with them, in high school, enjoyed a homestay--one of the best experiences in my life. The countryside is beautiful and places like Nice, Strausbourg, Brest, and Omaha beach are WELL WORTH your time.
Backpack most weekends, become a part of the town you live in, go to local pubs and you'll be changed greatly for the better.
If you'd like travel advice, or whatever, let me know...

I studied in Spain for a semester and lived in England for a year after I graduated. I loved both and would recomned either.
I would say that you shuold consider the opportunity to learn a foreign language as part of your decision.

Istanbul
I have some Armenian friends (don't let them hear you call them Turkish), and they rave about Istanbul. For me, the two countries I regretted missing most during my time in Europe were Germany and Scotland. I had some friends go play St. Andrews and then another group took a train trip across Germany, and both groups raved about their experience. The Black Forest region of Germany was particularly fun from what I recall.
Also, google European outdoor concerts and festivals. We didn't realize it when we left, but you can almost plan your excursions around concerts and events, as they are ALWAYS going on.
We missed seeing Kings of Leon ins Manchester by a day...bummed about that one.
By pure chance we were in Amsterdam during Dam Fest, which is this outdoor music festival right in Dam Square, and it was frigging awesome.

Ok, here's what I know. First of all, go for an entire year. There is no way that you cen get the feel of a place after only being there for a few months.
I studied at Leeds for three years pros-great school in an underrated English city, conveniently located (2 hours to London and 2 hours to Edinburgh), beautiful English countryside as you are near the Yorkshire Moors and Dales, great pubs and the privilege of watching Leeds United at Elland Road. If you go there let me know and I'll hook you up with some Service Crew guys. Cons-can be a rough town when the locals get piss drunk, i.e. keep a low profile when Leeds loses.
My girlfriend's father was a professor at Exeter and I visited there several times. Pros-Scrumpy Jack (if you have never had it...prepare yourself), great academics, beautiful city, best looking women that I saw in England but that isn't saying much, good rugby in the surrounding areas, great pub scene, and you aren't far from London and Wales. Cons-Small city, no football culture to speak of, people can be distant, not friendly like northerners.
I've had friends who attended Stirling in Scotland and enjoyed it. Good school and you are almost midway between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Very historical city as it was the focal point of Scottish independence 800 years ago. The only problem that I see is that it's a small city and could get tiresome for an entire year.

Omaha Beach is definitely a place I'd like to visit. I think Germany is probably where I'll wind up, and since the cost comparison is obviously the best financial choice, Bonn sounds like a great place. I've been reading up on it.
I definitely want to check out the Black Forest. I'd love to visit Amsterdam to say I was there, as well as Rome, Dublin, Belfast, Edinburgh, several cities in England, and I'm really interested in seeing parts of Scandinavia.
frick. So many decisions. I think one year is too short.

Haven't looked at your links, but choose Ireland if you can get to Galway or Cork.

Germany???!!! Really. England has better beer, better football, better cities (75% of Germany's cities were destroyed in WWII), and a more interesting history (after all, Germany has only been civilized for 300 years and has only existed as a nation for 150). Anyway, I expected as much from a jayhawker.

I don't think many really rate English beer (certainly no-one I know). The cider however, is another matter entirely. You can't even fricking get cider in much of mainland Europe. Crazy shite. In England we're spoilt for choice when it comes to decent ciders: Gaymers, Bulmers, Westons, Magners and you get some interesting local brews as well.

id go summer. why lose a year in lawrence when you could just add a summer in europe? that's just me though.
Posted on 7/18/10 at 4:55 pm to Mephistopheles
That's because they are ignorant. Because of the strict German brewing guidelines their beer lacks diversity (I defy you to tell the difference between a Spaten hefeweizen and a Weihenstephaner). Go to a free house anywhere in Britain and you will see a diversity of brewing styles and choices. Sorry but German beer (although good) doesn't compare. If you live in England, go to the CAMRA website and they will offer suggestions on where to go. Cheers!!
PS-Try Scrumpy Jack. That is genuine cider.

I'd definitely go a year. Nothing changes you like living in another country for an extended period of time. You can always go to school for a fifth or sixth year if you want, but the opportunity to live abroad for more than a couple months doesn't come very often.

Germany has the better women, and is much closer to the Prague, where beautiful women seem to congregate.

I haven't been to Germany, although I would love to go. Of the countries you've listed, I've been to England and the Netherlands, and I'm confident you would enjoy the Netherlands more, unless you're really just interested in the domestic soccer league.

Just go to London. Beautiful women congregate there from all over the continent, similar to New York. Plus you get a lot of women from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa who possess a deep desire for some culture and some good times. You are correct though in that there are some gorgeous broads in Prague.
