Schedule friendlies against eliminated teams?

I'm sure one of you boys know, and i didn't want to start a thread, but how will the qualification process work leading up to 2026 given the automatic bids? i honestly have no clue, and wonder how it affects the other concacaf countries, as well as the USMNT.

Same thing every other host nation does.

I'm assuming US, Canada and Mexico all get auto bids, which doesn't change much, considering the US and Mexico were going to qualify anyway. The rest of CONCACAF will do qualifiers to fill out the remainder.

Best day ever for Canada today.

Soooo, according to this article automatic bids aren't..automatic..apparently.
I did not know this. I imagine it's pretty rare for the host country to not receive one. Any idea the last time a host country was made to go through qualification?

quote:

As of the granting of the bid, we still don’t know whether or not the host countries will have to qualify, or if a singular auto-bid will be given out. The United States is hosting 60 of the 80 matches and is most likely to end up not needing to qualify for the tournament, but that’s still yet to be determined. FIFA could make one, two, all three, or none of the teams qualify for the tournament. That’s likely to be decided at the next FIFA Congress, which will be held on June 5, 2019 in Paris. Until then, all of the hosts will be sweating.

I think it would be a big surprise if the 3 countries don't all get auto bids, especially with the expansion to 48 teams. USA and Mexico likely would qualify anyway so Canada is really the only true team that would greatly benefit from an auto-bid.

I know this is the first time it's 3, but for Japan/South Korea.

Both those teams got autobids.

They were asking about auto-bids in the post-vote press conference and stated that nothing has been determined as of yet. I would expect all 3 to get auto-bids though with Mexico and Canada each getting at least one of their 2 group stage matches in their respective countries (Mexico in Azteca and Canada probably in Toronto). Here's a blurb about it from ESPN:

quote:

The format for automatic bids for host countries is in transition. The North American region will get 6.5 bids (including one-half of a bid because one team will play another team from another country in a playoff to get in), and it hasn't been decided whether all three hosts of the United bid will get in automatically. In 2002, when Japan and South Korea co-hosted the event, both teams were given automatic bids.

I said this earlier this morning in a thread asking this exact question and everyone acted like I was a retard and I was downvoted. This board is dumb as hell.

This is a good point.

I could totally see FIFA fricking us though solely because it's the US.

In reality when the World Cup expands qualification becomes almost an afterthought doesn't it?

They gave us this WC for the money. They won’t risk losing out on all that by not giving the US and Mexico auto-bids.

You sure about that? Even with the expansion we still suck.

Considering we finished 5th in a down year, yes, we would've definitely qualified.
