Flying across the pond and have some layover time in both places on the way and on the way back. Any of y’all have any tips for leaving the airport at both places? How hard was it to get back in?

Some friends had a similar layover in London and they were able to see a lot of the major sights in London on a city tour

Have no idea about Paris

Just got back from there. Had a 7 1/2 hour layover at Heathrow on the way back. We booked tickets for Windsor Castle in advance, took cabs there and back and had a great time doing the tour. We were gone for about 4 hours total. They have a place in Heathrow that will store your carryon luggage for you so you don't have to tote bags around with you. I would definitely recommend to anyone with a 6+ hour layover.

Paris has a train but it is kind of slow. You'll probably need 3-4 hours to do something meaningful in downtown Paris.

In London you can take the tube from and to Heathrow easily and quickly.
In Paris, you are better off taking a cab.

Spent a lot more time in London than I have in Paris so I’ll go with what I know better.

Heathrow is on the extreme west side of the London metropolitan area.

You can take the tube from Heathrow into downtown London, it takes about an hour travel time each way.

Here’s a nice itinerary (for me):

Take the Piccadilly Line from LHR to Green Park (50 minutes) exit at Green Park, walk over to the Ritz Hotel and pop in for Breakfast, Brunch, or Lunch+.

Walk back to Green Park Station, tube on the Victoria Line to Pimlico Station (~5 minutes) or just walk from the Ritz to the Tate Britain Museum (Millbank) through St James’s & Whitehall (~30 minute walk)*

Tate Britain Link

Stay at the Tate until they kick you out and then go back to Heathrow.

Obviously a bunch more things other than that. It also depends on what time of the day your window is.

+Coat & tie mandatory, no jeans or trainers. I always fly wearing a sport coat so adding a tie isn’t a big deal.

*Along this walk is the underground bunkers that the Brits used during WWII as their command center (Churchill War Rooms)

In London the Heathrow Express takes 15 min. The tube takes 45-60min. Spend the money on HEX. Can get a lot of stuff in during that time.

Honestly, Ive used a 8 hour layover to grab several hours of sleep at the Hilton Garden Inn at Heathrow, shower, sleep, etc. especially on way to Europe.

It took us almost 2 1/2 hours to get through customs at CDG. Heathrow was no issue.
