I wouldn’t come to Asheville for a family vacation, no.

So after all of this, I shouldn’t bring my kids to Asheville for NYE.
I’d save it for the summer. Hopefully things will be closer to normal in restaurants/breweries and you can enjoy the warmer weather for outdoor activities. The only brewery that I can see being kid friendly would be Sierra Nevada and it’s been closed since March. They have good food too. Asheville could be cold as balls on NYE.

You can get away with kids at a number of the breweries.

It’s pretty legitimate for booze and art, and the food scene doesn’t suck despite what some would have you believe. Just not much of a family city

Yeah, I was just talking about Sierra has a large outdoor space better suited for kids.

We went to Asheville (the wifey and I) last year and loved it. As the poster above says, it does not impress me as a place to stay with children. Can't say I explored what there is to do with kids there, but outside of hiking (which 8 and 5 y/o's might like occasionally but would likely bore them if done every day), the city is geared to folks who enjoy great restaurants, bars, breweries, rooftop bars, etc.

The scenery surrounding the city (mountains, hiking, etc.) is fantastic, though.

Bad move with the kiddies. Summer months much more options for family stuff. And yes it could be iced up that time of year. Possibly enough snow at Wolf Ridge to get some skiing in that would save the day

I think the problem would be the weather around NYE. I was just in Asheville a couple of weeks ago, and the breweries that were open only had their outdoor seating open. Could be really cold around NYE. It was a pretty day when we were there, and every place was packed soon after lunch. We only went to Burial because the lines to get in at all the others around there were so long.

Go to the Highlands at least for a day. See all the waterfalls and just get outside. The area is unique and beautiful.

Went a month ago. Scenery outside the city was wonderful. The people inside the city were horrendous. There is a line and a long wait to get into basically everywhere, restaurants, breweries, bars, dessert shops. The food was overrated, the beer was good. I would not recommend if someone is going there to hang out in asheville right now bc they are Covid crazy everywhere we went and many places were closed.

Frequent Asheville traveler here (for work and for fun).

Before COVID, if you confined yourself to the "tourist" stuff, I can see how you could leave underwhelmed. Currently it isn't the same.

Do some homework and drive 15 minutes north to Weaverville and have lunch. If you have a bad weather day, walk around the antique stores off Swannanoa Rd (have kids? show them all the stuff you had or that your grandparents had in their house). Go to Mt Mitchell. Botanical garden. Hike Mt Pisgah. Hike Black Balsam Knob. Side trip to Waynesville. Walk around downtown Black Mountain and ride through Montreat. Pinball museum is great and walk the nearby Grove Arcade for its architecture. Drive a hour or so north to Linville Falls/Caverns. Go to Hot Springs. Tube the French Broad (pro tip, the lower part is more scenic and fun).

Post COVID it is not the same. I went for work last week and yes the breweries had lines and closed early. Sierra is still closed. Did a guys' trip to Cherokee this summer and stayed in AVL the first night and the place was dead. Went back in August with the family and it wasn't much different (we left early and the hotel we stayed in had windows smashed by protesters). While I can't say don't go, it is definitely not the Asheville that it was a year ago.

This. I'm there multiple times a year for work. Spend 25-30 nights on average. Covid has reaally jacked up the vibe in Asheville. Downtown is not near as fun and the smelly hippie culture, and general shitty attitudes, abound. Black Mountain, Weaverville and the outlying areas are still ok.

This is a rather apt observation. I've been traveling there for years as well. There's always been sort of a "progressive"/hippie vibe but is was nicely balanced by a sort of old school appalachian/mountain ethos. It was a rather great place in that regard. Nowadays the balance there seems completely out of whack.

We just spent a week in Chimney Rock NC the week of thanksgiving, 30 minutes south of Asheville. Great State Park with fantastic views, Broad river run through town, and the sound is so peaceful. Burntshirt winery(allows children). Very scenic quaint town, Lots of dining options in town and near Lake Lure. Zip lining and UTV riding at Canopy Ridge, horseback riding at Cedar Creek stables. Beautiful place and our kids(teenagers) enjoyed the hell out of it. Great vacation.

We went to Chimney Rock one day and it was crowded and people were having a good time. A much different feel than what we experienced in Asheville. My best friend lives south of Asheville and he admitted that Covid and Politics specifically George Floyd had done a number on the place in 2020. I will give it another try in a few years because outside of Asheville was great, but I wouldn't recommend Asheville especially during the winter to anyone right now.

You Must wear a mask in restaurants. $1,500 fine and misdemeanor. They are serious.
