Belize City Mayan ruins tour?

Headed to Belize in March for a quick trip and looking to do a day visit to the Mayan ruins out of Belize City. Anyone ever done this? Looking at the tubing trip through the caves also. Worth it?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I did it on the back end of a dive trip. Went to Altun Ha. Wasn’t a bad trip from Belize City. And it was during Covid, so our group was about the only ones there. Was told that it can get crowded when the cruise ships are docking. I enjoyed getting to see it.
Just make sure you find someone reputable to take you out there. Belize ain’t the safest place, especially Belize City.

We hired a private driver for the day and went across Belize to Xunantunich. It was a great day. I would not attempt to rent a car and drive myself. The tubing is fun and completely dependent on water level which should be fine in March.

Yes.
I visited Belize City as a port on a cruise. We took a guided tour of the Mayan ruins of Alton Ha which is about a half hour ride from town. I do recommend it. It was interesting.

Definitely recommend using a private charter. They picked us up at our hotel on ambergris Caye, took us to the ferry and we had a driver pick us up at the port. Was a long day but worth it. Got to see the countryside. Went to the ruin and then went tubing on the way back. Lots of different packages you can pair with this trip if you don’t want to do the tubing.

Myself, my daughter, and her friend, both in their 20s (no pics) rented a car in Belize City (at the airport) and drove to San Ignacio, where we stayed a few days. We had no problems at all. We drove to Xunantunich as well and had a great time. The ATM Cave tour is also great and I would highly recommend. You do need to be able to do a little climbling and hiking in waist deep water.
We had a great time and felt safe. I wouldn't stay in Belize City.

Did this tour, it's $320 pp, Tropic Air picks you up at San Pedro or Belize City and flies you to Orange Walk, you get off the plane there and they put you in a van and drive you to a nearby river landing (on the New River). From there it's about a 30-40 minute boat trip to Lamanai Mayan ruins on the River. You then have lunch at the ruins and return. You can hire a guide at the ruins, as I recall.
Not many visitors at Lamanai.

San Ignacio
Great town. I recommend a driver for the day because it isn't expensive at all and no navigation is necessary.

The country of Belize is generally safe, but Belize City is definitely not safe after dark, and there's nothing worth seeing in the city in any case. You can stay at the Radisson, though, and there are a couple of decent restaurants nearby.
I found it easy to drive myself around the country, so I recommend renting a car. I had no problems at all, except for the ticket I got for going the wrong way down a street in Belize City. Altun Ha is worth the drive.
But you can't drive to the ATM cave (you have to get picked up in Belize City or San Ignacio for a tour), and that is the most mind-blowing thing I've seen in Central America.

If you're in good physical condition, this cave is a must for any trip to mainland Belize.

I agree with all of this. It may be cheap to get a driver, but we stayed for 3 nights in San Ignacio, so we needed the car. ATM was truly one of the most amazing places I've been. It takes a little effort to do the hike, but it wasn't like it was that hard.
