Delta and United have begun cancelling flights for tomorrow and Saturday already. If anyone has issues please post here!
"The nationwide spike in omicron cases this week has had a direct impact on our flight crews and the people who run our operation," United said in a statement. "As a result, we've unfortunately had to cancel some flights and are notifying impacted customers in advance of them coming to the airport."
As of Thursday evening, United Airlines has proactively cancelled 112 flights for Christmas Eve. Delta Air Lines also proactively canceled around 90 flights for Christmas Eve.“

Delta has also posted two waivers for travel to Seattle for Dec 25 and 26 and Salt Lake City Dec 26th. If you're anticipating flying through or to one of these cities, feel free to call in and get rebooked. You may be able to do it on the app or online, but that is usually hit or miss with weather waivers.

I think DL has more posted for Saturday already than Friday. It’s going to be an ugly weekend. More cancellations on the horizon and impending weather as the weekend continues.
I posted on the OT but this is not a by product of covid on its own. It’s largely a byproduct of these airlines treating frontline workers like total shite. Workers are fed up and calling in sick, FMLA, getting boosters (which are paid protected and easy way to get paid to not go to work, and then some are actually sick with COVID.
But as I posted earlier, these problems could have been mitigated. Delta had similar meltdowns last year too.

Yeah, Delta, AA, and Southwest have all been down this road before.
This is the first time for United, though.

Flying AA tomorrow from Lafayette to Albuquerque for a family ski trip. I pray we make it there.

Im flying atl to miami next week Friday the 31st. When do you think I might hear something about a cancelation if they decide to go that route? Do we know how they're selecting which flights they're canceling?

Have fun in Taos Tom! Let me know how it is, scheduled to go there mid February and I've never been. Dallas weather looks good so shouldn't be any issues there

You won't know until a day before if you're lucky, think they usually cancel the flights late the night before if they know there's crew scheduling issues.
For how they're selecting, I have no idea. Not sure if it's based on flight loads (empty flights vs full flights), specific crews, or weather. Probably a combination of everything above

At MSY now. Traffic very light because of canceled flights, I assume. 5 minutes to get through regular security.
Cuse, I’m flying AA to Miami and then to South America. AA seems to be avoiding this mess, right?

I'd say yes but it looks like your flight is delayed a half hour this morning. How long is your layover in MIA supposed to be?
Posted on 12/24/21 at 11:31 am to CuseTiger
5 hours. Going to check out Little Havana. Have a mojito and smoke a cigar.

AA just canceled my MSY-MIA flight at 6:35 PM tomorrow. Trying to get rebooked. Looks like I'm going to have to connect in DFW---get to MSY at 6:05PM and arrive in MIA at 12:30 AM instead of 9:30 PM.
Posted on 12/24/21 at 8:33 pm to GOP_Tiger
As long as you can still get out tomorrow I'd take whatever they rebooked you on. At this point you an ask for an earlier MSY-DFW if you want since your flight cancelled. Whatever flight you want, even if it's Sunday morning instead

There are no flights Sunday morning that get me to MIA in time for my morning flight to San Pedro Sula (SAP). If I get the afternoon flight from MIA to SAP, then I can't make my connection there (on Aerolineas Sosa, a local airline) to La Ceiba (LCE).
Nor are there any BTR departures that will help me get to SAP in time to make my 4pm flight to LCE.
So, I'm no longer flying to MIA in first class, and instead of a 6:35-9:30 flight, I have 6:05-12:30. Not bad, considering.
By the way, anyone know if there is any parking still available at MSY?

Agreed it could be a lot worse. Have a friend stuck in Detroit tonight thanks to Delta. In your case I just looked, there's a 340pm direct MSY-MIA that is still showing as operating tomorrow as well. First class just showed up instead of economy

Yeah, but then my daughter doesn't get to have a Christmas meal with her mom and her mom's family. So, that doesn't work, and it's better to lose the sleep and get to MIA late.
Thanks for looking, though.

Ended up getting sent to Lagos, Nigeria. Working DL54 now.

All good, enjoy the day then deal with the flying mess
They legitimately sent you to probably the furthest possible location from home for the holiday. The good news is you'll miss out on the weather + staffing mess here in the US while you're gone so not necessarily a bad thing. Safe travels

One other note- I've noticed some of the regional airlines like Mesa and Skywest have already started cancelling flights due to crew availability
That’s because their pilots aren’t making as much holiday pay as PSA, Envoy, and mainline AA pilots. Now, the flight attendants are getting (relatively) shafted and are calling out and that’s canceling flights.
And I don’t blame the FAs for calling out since they’re not getting 3x holiday pay like the pilots.

Yep here now poolside in Lagos! Hotel is actually really nice and Christmas celebrations are good. Plus free booze. Not a bad way to spend Christmas and I’ll be home Monday morning!
