Sounds like your night got even longer after we chatted around 11pm. I'll be on the lookout for your flights today and see if there's any issues.

All the major airlines have had issues this summer. Southwest had the IT issues a few weeks ago that grounded flights, American is having staffing issues and scheduled too many flights. Delta was not doing great around the holidays (thanksgiving, Christmas, easter) due to staff calling out sick, not sure how this weekend is going for them. Honestly haven't heard bad things about United or JetBlue yet, but there's always something.

My advice to everyone here- plan for the worst, hope for the best. Your in-laws were smart to at least get to Texas yesterday. Bet the next flight from BWI to AUS was in like 3 days due to limited flights. If on one of the 3 major airlines (delta, american, united), they can rebook you on any of those airlines and likely get you to the destination quicker than strictly sticking with your original airline. Be flexible and book longer connections (my mom had 2 hr 45 min in LAX on Wednesday that turned into 30 min due to weather delays in south FL).

Yeah, I am honestly surprised that United is the one of the Big 4 that hasn't had any big issues.

Delta's issues were the result of trying to get pilots retrained on different plane types, but I think that they have largely gotten them resolved. I guess we'll see this weekend.

We're leaving for Costa Rica in a couple of weeks - how was it getting through everything at ABIA?

I've never heard of this before

I've heard bout it in Phoenix and Vegas.

Apparently, if it gets to a certain temperature, the plane can't lift during takeoff (or fly) due to less dense air.

United has their shite together somehow unlike in the past. I'm sure someone on here has a horror story from within the last 6 months on them, but for the most part they've been quiet which in the airline industry is a good thing.

Good call on Delta's pilots and the training. I guess retiring the MD88s, MD90s, and a good chunk of 717s added to the madness in retraining on other planes. Plus all the widebodies that were sitting for a while, glad to see Delta using those on domestic routes like ATL-SEA, JFK-ATL, ATL-PHX, ATL-SAN etc.

Quick check for today on cancelled/delayed flights Flightaware cancelled-
Southwest
Cancelled- # of flights 194, 5% of total flights
Delayed- # 323, 9%

American
Cancelled- # 89, 3%
Delayed- # 239, 8%

Jetblue
Cancelled- 11, 1%
Delayed- 126, 12%

United
Cancelled- 0
Delayed- 0

Delta
Cancelled- 2, 0%
Delayed- 72, 2%

Delta's only 2 cancelled flights are to the caribbean and due to the storm so giving them a pass on that. But United is doing well, their subsidaries might have delays (Republic, Mesa, Skywest) but for mainline they're in the clear today.

Yep.

They could eventually get off the ground but the runways aren't long enough when it gets over x temperature.

Well Blue Garage was full. It said "reservations only" but we pushed and got a ticket

They were successfully trying to push people to Red Garage.

Economy looked plenty of room.

TSA Precheck was like 30 deep at Checkpoint 1. Took maybe 5 minutes.

Thanks for the stats and assist. I know our inbound plane from JFK left on time. There's some weather around JFK but I don't think it's supposed to be too severe but I'm paranoid after last night.

Money is no object to make my Istanbul flight!

Surprisingly your flight is on time given the mess in NYC yesterday, saw your inbound is landing in about 15 minutes. I am jealous you get a nice A220, nice seats, plenty of overhead space plus the tvs/entertainment systems have the best selection of movies.

Hopefully they change your flight path or it's going to be bumpy the entire time. They have you literally on the edge of the front all the way to NYC LINK

Inbound flight for your Istanbul flight is on its way as well, looking good there Turkish Flt 1

Sweet!

I'm hopeful if we have problems my Sky club access may avoid a customer service clusterfrick.

Ya there's another flight put of JFK around midnight so hopefully they'd bump me to that if all else failed.

I also now how two options to Zagreb which is a win as well. The Sunday evening flight was added like a week ago. Before they did that I had maybe one option to go via Vienna or something to get to Zagreb in reasonable time.

You should be fine today, I do think your flight to JFK is 100% full or oversold (they aren't selling any tickets). Maybe you can spend some time with your inlaws back at the house after making $1000 per person?

Enjoy the nice long walk from B42 to baggage claim in T4, I always hated coming into B55 and making my way to the airtrain. Skyclub at JFK is nice, wonder if the showers are back open? Might be a nice break after your long night

We're flying on TK4 tomorrow. I think TK3 is our inbound. Which already landed.

Staying at TWA hotel tonight.

Oh that's perfect. TWA hotel is awesome, you planning on going up to the pool? Awesome runway views from there. The gym is also awesome in the basement area.

Depends if you're willing to volunteer, but given it's a holiday weekend and the mess southwest has been in everything to NYC is booked except for that 7pm AUS-JFK flight. The inbound for that flight comes from Minneapolis and the plane is already at MSP so looking ok there.

You could also ask (if it's oversold) to have them put you in first class on the later flight given your whole ordeal

I wanted to do the pool but it's like $50 a person to go up. Like WTF? I want to refuse on principle.

Ya I've been watching the 7pm in case something goes sideways here. Otherwise I want to get to JFK as soon as possible to calm my nerves. Hitting the gin.

Glad I bought comfort+ for this leg. 2 person side.

Bruh, when did they add that $25/person pool reservation? That's messed up. Stayed there 1.5 years ago and they didn't have that shite.

Saw they just updated the routing, still have you going through all the storms in the south. Over to Baton Rouge, over to Atlanta, then over to Charlotte and up. Good news is landing at 4:47pm instead of 5:16pm.

Sounds like you have all the right solutions.

Why don’t you be the next CEO of Southwest Airlines?

Don't be like that. I didn't say I had the solutions, I said other airlines handled it better, so those CEOs had some solutions, agree?

I really don't get why what I said upset people. It seems to be a pretty vanilla observation. I said with Southwest having problems for two weeks now be careful booking or monitor your flights closely in the near future.
