International Travel: Documentation of Recovery from COVID-19

Saw this on the CDC website, updated in December:
Has anyone here who has traveled internationally tried to provide Documentation of Recovery from COVID-19, versus a negative covid test to re-enter the US? How was your experience with this process?

If you plan to travel internationally, you will need to get a COVID-19 viral test (regardless of vaccination status or citizenship) no more than 1 day before you travel by air into the United States. You must show your negative result to the airline before you board your flight.
If you recently recovered from COVID-19, you may instead travel with documentation of recovery from COVID-19 (i.e., your positive COVID-19 viral test result on a sample taken no more than 90 days before the flight’s departure from a foreign country and a letter from a licensed healthcare provider or a public health official stating that you were cleared to travel).

Yes, had COVID in December, recovered, traveled internationally twice since. My doctor wrote and signed my letter, I had another friend who got a letter from the urgent care where he tested. Both times agents wanted to see both the letter and the proof of the positive test, I had the lab report.
Definitely make sure the dates match from the positive test and the letter. Also I think the window is only 60 or 90 days.

Traveled back to the states earlier this month after testing positive. Doctor provided me a note saying I was clear and able to travel. Flew back 5 days after testing positive. Airline never even checked.

Yes. Just got back from Cozumel and it was extremely easy. You do have to show your positive test result AND a note from a doctor saying that you recovered and are fine to travel. Technically it doesn't have to be "your doctor", but could be any qualified health professional.
I had both on my phone, pulled them up at the ticket counter, they looked at them for 3-4 seconds, and gave me my boarding pass.

Yes to the first part. As for the window, it is 90 days from the first positive test date. That means your flight back to the U.S. has to be within that 90 day period.

How do they know you had a positive test?

The same way they know you had a negative test… you show them the test results from the lab either electronic or hard copy.
So if you test positive, save the results.

American Airlines guy in Aruba looked at the test and said "what does that shite mean?" I said - "It's proof of recovery and I can fly home." He said "I am an airline employee, not a damn doctor, if you say it's good that's fine with me. Have a nice flight."

Which is logically how it should be! This world is nuts man.
