The Mrs (no pics) have a week sans the kid and we've planned a road trip to Key Largo (2 nights) and a house boat in Key West (2 nights).

Any must see, must eat, must drink things we need to know?

Lots of good restaurants in Key West.

Louie’s Backyard was our favorite.

Latitude’s is very nice. You take a boat there. Need reservations.

Santiago’s Bodega is a very good tapas bar.

Blue Heaven is popular.

We had a great meal at Lazy Days South, which is located at the south end of Marathon. We enjoyed a huge sampler of fresh fish, which was great.

Hemingway House tour

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed these as well. The Hemingway stories are awesome, especially the origin of the pool.

I'll add the Mel Fisher Museum to the list of things to do. We enjoyed walking through it and wondering how much other treasure is still there.

My number 1 recommendation is to hire a guide and get on the water for a day. We found a private guide to take 4 of us around for the day. Went snorkeling at a reef, sandbar for a couple hours, found dolphins and sea turtles, and a couple ship wrecks. It was a little pricey but worth the money.

They have a good Happy Hour also.

I had 5 different key lime pies in Key West, and Blue Heaven's was the most disappointing.

Oh, and you'll see sheriff vehicles on the side of the road very often to deter speeding, but 99% of the time they're empty. It's the state troopers that are hiding out that you'll need to keep an eye out for.

Both places are unique and very different from your typical FL beach vacation. There is heavy Latin American influence in Key West with the amount of Cuban restaurants that is on Duval street. The strong South American cultural influence combined with a tropical climate makes for an exclusive, highly sought after trip-destination.

That being said, Key West is not a great beach location, if that’s what you’re looking for. Most people who visit Key West go to the souvenir shops and restaurants on Duval street.

Key West is one of the best domestic trips I’ve been on, and I usually hate touristy areas. Take a jet ski tour around the island. Must go to Mallory Square for a sunset, they have local performers. The night time ghost tour is really cool, there’s some crazy shite that has went on in the island’s past. Sloppy Joes and Captain Tony’s are great. Was never a huge Hemingway fan, but his house visit is a must. Truman’s little White House was okay at best. It’s a small island, but you could spend a month down there without issue.

No name pub is really cool in Cow key?, but the food is terrible. Key West actually has a cool comedy club if you like that kind of thing, and there’s some semi popular people that go through.
