Taking the family (wife & 19-year-old son) to see So-Fi Stadium when the Saints play the Chargers on October 27th. We have never been to the area, and we have about 3 days to be tourists with a rental car. What are the absolute must-sees?

Where are you staying? I would avoid Hollywood. The beaches should still be good that time of year. Manhattan and Hermosa are my favorites but you can go nicer if you head down to Orange County. Laguna, Dana Point, etc

Do a bicycle tour. It’s a blast and a great way to see the distinct LA neighborhoods. I can send a link to the one we used if interested

Getty and/or LACMA if fans of art and museums

Magic Mountain is about 35-45 miles away if you love roller coasters and thrill rides.

Santa Monica Promenade if you’re interested in shopping

Venice Beach for the Pacific Ocean, the beach, some tourist trap shopping (unless it’s literally all dispensaries now).

In the Wilshire area, you have the La Brea Tar Pits. Also the Petersen Automotive Museum if you’re into cars.

Very touristic but if you’ve never been, you may find Hollywood and Highland worth a visit with the Walk of Fame and some older theaters.

If you like hiking, Griffith Park is a good place to go for some hiking and you’ll get some famous views (including the Hollywood sign).

Several years ago, this would be my top recommendation.

Highly recommend you skip both now. I'd skip Hollywood also.

If you want shopping, go to rodeo Dr or Westfield century City.

I recommend canceling and finding another city! Go to KC at the end of September.

Malibu and the Santa Monica Pier were always fun . The Getty is amazing and totally worth it. S are the museums on Usc campus next to the stadium.
Hollywood is worth driving through but it's dingy and gritty. I made the mistake of staying in Hollywood on my first LA trip. I had no idea it was that seedy.
Now there are cool things to do but it's really ran down.
The Peterson museum is awesome if your son is into cars. The LaBrea tarpits are close to that as well.

I always recommend the Warner Bros studio tour. Really neat to see the backlot and active shooting sets

Along with some of the things other posters have mentioned, I’d add Griffith Park Observatory, La Brea Tar Pits, Knotts Berry Farm, Aquarium of The Pacific in Long Beach,
