Lots of beautiful roads in this thread, most of which I am familiar with but yet to traverse.

Sticking to roads I have driven, here are a few that may be under the radar:

1. Catalina Highway from Tucson to Mt Lemmon. In 30 miles you go from desert scrub to giant saguaros to ponderosa pines to aspens (six different ecosystems total). Several pullouts along the way with tremendous views of the city of Tucson, not to mention the unique rock formations and 100 mile views around every other turn for the first half of the drive.

too tired to post any others. some pretty cool roads in AZ and NM. wide open spaces, rocks, mountains, big skies.

Did the Million Dollar Highway on a motorcycle this summer. It is a must do if you are on a bike or in a car. Lots of wonderful roads in South Dakota too like Needles, Vanocker Canyon, Spearfish Canyon, Nemo and the Devils Tower highway is spectacular.

From San Francisco to Muir Woods.

I was honestly too terrified of the narrow roads along the mountain to enjoy.

Did this drive from SF to LA. Other than the heavy fog in the Big Sur area, it was a excellent drive...

Anyone have any suggestions on a great road that can be driven in mid January? I am open to anything in the continental US.

Drive the Oregon coast. Astoria to Brookings. As good as it gets...

It is great in the winter. The stories, the better.
