Will we freeze to death?

It's a distinct possibility depending on where you are. Altitude matters.

Went in"spring" 2 yr ago to Escalate and Capitol Reef area, first week of April. Camping in tent in low teens, couldn't backpack cause of snow. Lived in Utah 30 years and knew it can snow/be cold anytime but that was unusual. Can also be "balmy" at that time, highs in 50's-60s. Just have to be prepared and watch the forecast

As mentioned, high altitude will have snow.
We went to the Grand Canyon in April and there was still snow in some places. Many of the canyon roads and trails are closed for the winter.

Can be pretty unpredictable. Was in Scottsdale in March 2023 on business and planned to drive up to Sedona for a day, they ended up with 8in of snow in a surprise storm. Flagstaff and surrounding areas were totally shutdown

We stayed in Duck Creek Village the first week of April this year for spring break going between Bryce and Zion and there were 2-3 feet of snow on the ground there with lows every night in the high teens to 20's. Granted, it's at about 8500 feet, but way more snow than we thought there would be.
There was a decent amount of snow in Bryce as well, but none in Zion, fwiw.

We just spent time at a glamping spot (eco A frames) in Hildale, Utah. Cool place and you can search on Abnb……the town is not a destination and has a weird factor (LDS folks). Not spooky just odd. Has a strangely very nice super market with awesome booze selections.
Was close enough for jump to Zion (beautiful!) and we also hit the North Rim of GC (they will be closed).
