What kind of strikes? What all did it impact?
There was a partial rail strike when we were there. Impacted using their Metro system.
However, the primary reason we didn't go to Sintra was time. We could have hired an Uber, which would have been fairly expensive, but it's generally an all day trip and we didn't have that time to do that.

Wanted to add something about Fátima since we just watched the movie on Netflix last night (very powerful movie BTW).
I really had no real awareness of the Miracle of Fátima, the magnitude of the crowds or it's place in Catholic Theology.
Video
The sixth and final miracle, the Miracle of the Sun, occurred on the 13th of October, 1917. This was essentially in response to the prophecy made by the three children. The children told the people in the village to come out and witness it, even the skeptics. There are reports of over 70,000 people being in attendance.
According to various witness accounts, the rainy sky cleared up, and the ground that was wet from the rain became dry. The sun appeared “dancing around” and “zig-zagging” in the sky within broken clouds, giving it the name of the Miracle of the Sun. Some say that the dancing sun even appeared to fly closer to the earth and then jump back into its place quickly. Others also mentioned multicolored light and radiant colors all over the sky. They said the Miracle of the Sun lasted for at least 10 minutes. The children were then finally believed by the people of Fátima.

I just got back from 5ish weeks in Lisbon, with side trips to Nazaré and Porto towards the end. I missed Sintra as well bc the weekend I was planning on going the workers at the various sites there were striking and it was essentially closed April 6th-9th-ish. Also, my train back to Lisbon from Porto never showed up due to the strikes lol. Luckily, I was able to get on another one a couple hours later. Can't say I agree with your take though. I will definitely be back to Portugal and had an amazing time staying in Lisbon.

Tell us more! What did you like most?

There was a lot I liked! To start, went for 5 weeks to really get an immersive experience. I rented an Airbnb with a balcony overlooking Praça Dom Luis I. So, the location was prime for what I was looking for in restaurants, being close to the river, walkability, close to multiple good coworking spaces and laptop friendly cafes and just proximity to the area I wanted to be in and explore. The weather was perfect the whole time so one of the great things was hanging out at the various places where people congregate in the evenings, city overlooks, jardims, kiosks in parks/squares and certain spots near the river. Taking in live music and putting down some Super Bocks watching the people and sun go down. I found the people to be great and welcoming. I stayed in Cais do Sodre so the "hey buddy you need something" scammers were everywhere, but even they were decent people LOL. You say you felt like the city was dirty, which I get from first glance, especially with how they embrace the street art. But after some time it seemed like the Portuguese took a little more pride in public infrastructure than you see in the US. Noticeably, the cleanliness of public restrooms everywhere I went, trash pickup seemingly every night, hell they even mopped, like a bucket of water and mop, Pink Street in the mornings. A far cry from somewhere like NYC with trash in the streets, rats everywhere at night, etc.
Nazaré was an amazing escape from the city, even though it was too cool to get in the water. Its just a really cool town at the base of this massive cliff with some fiery surf on the north side. There are some really cool trails to walk around and excellent restaurants in Sitio where I stayed. Slower pace of course than Lisbon, but was a nice retreat before getting to Porto.
Porto, I met up with a coworker that lives there and he and his wife along with some of their friends showed me around and planned various things to do. We also hit Sandeman for the tour and really enjoyed that. I didn't find it to be overly crowded and at times when i did have to stand in a line it usually moved really fast.
In the end what I liked most probably isn't unique to Lisbon, or Portugal, but it was the people and atmosphere. Which is hard to capture in a 2 day stay working through a packed itinerary.

Nice summary!
The "cultural immersion" dynamic you see when you spend more time in an area vs. a short trip, or a tour like we did.
We've had extended time in certain cities or countries, and had some whirlwind type tour experiences as well. Understand the reasoning. You could probably say that for almost any country you visit though.
Original point wasn't necessarily Lisbon wasn't fun, it was just our perception as compared to other major cities we've been too. For example, the experiences we've had in cities like Paris, Florence, Budapest, Prague (our favorite) or Ljubljana for example.

Agreed. Florence, Budapest, Prague are definitely on my list for similar longer stays.

Leaving the azores today, absolutely loved it. The weather forecast looked bad, but we didn’t have a problem with weather. I’m San Miguel we hiked to lagoa do fogo which was a very nice hike, explored furnis and had dinner there. We also did a coastal hike because sete cidades was covered in fog. We visited the tea plantations and pineapple, and ate some great food in ponta Delgado.
We then took a plane to terciera which had beautiful weather. We did a coastal hike and a hike in the middle of the island. We stayed in Angra and had some incredible Italian and Azorean food. We did another coast hike and did a whale watching tour and saw blue whales up close. The highlight of the island was the dormant volcano. It is very unassuming, then when you get out of the tunnel it takes your breathe away with the beauty and the water dripping, can’t describe it.
Overall was a great trip and the weather for the most part was fine, terciera was sunny the whole time. I would like to return one day and do some of the other islands

For anyone headed to Lisbon, highly recommend taking a walk through a neighborhood called the Mouraria (Moorish Quarter). Its up a hill, but if the walk is a little forboding (we handled it fine) there are pedicabs. Beautiful area, with a castle that you can tour, and an amazing restaurant, Cantinho Do Aziz. Restaurant has sort of a hole in the wall vibe, but the food is simply amazing and extremely inexpensive. We live in Seville so trips to Lisbon are easy for us.

Oh, I didn't know that you were going to Terceira. Angra might be my favorite small city in the world (Alesund, Norway is my other favorite). Did you eat a bowl of alcatra? Please say yes.
Tunnel view, looking up out of the volcano:
For the rest of y'all, what luvdatigahs is describing is that, once upon a geologic time, the old volcano on the island had a sudden draining of its magma chamber, so you can descend down a set of stairs through the eruption cone down into the cave of the old magma chamber.
I have been in lava tube caves in Hawaii and Iceland and on Pico Island in the Azores, but Terceira is the only place that I've ever been where I could enter a former magma chamber. If you like caves, it's a special place.

It’s really hard to describe, even the pictures don’t do it justice. The fact that water is constantly dripping down just adds to the mystique

If you are on terciera island starting may 1st they have running of the bulls every night for a couple months I believe. I missed this by one day, guess I will have to return another time

Never seen more graffiti than in Lisbon and Porto.
Both are great cities but I personally hate all the graffiti.
Douro valley is a gem.

They also do something like that during the Sanjoaninas festival, but I didn't get to see it before we had to leave. My pics from the first night and the first morning of the festival in 2018.

I get that since graffiti has a negative stigma in the US. Not necessarily graffiti, but I really liked art by Bordalo II. It kinda became a like scavenger hunt for me walking around the city and stumbling across his art.

Can someone without any real language skills outside of English (VERY limited Spanish) get by in Spain and Portugal ok? These have been at the top of my bucket list for awhile.
Posted on 5/2/23 at 7:47 am to Icansee4miles
Yes, tons of people speak English, wouldn’t hurt to learn a few words though.

Moved to Seville a little over 2 years ago, and my Spanish was bad. Its conversational level now. People in Spain will assist you if you make the effort to speak their language - have had zero problems here, related to language or otherwise. Although I have not been in Portugal nearly as much, our trips there have been the same re language. Highly recommend Duolingo, and once you are here, use the language app that is pre-installed on a lot of phones.
