Planning for this trip in a few years.

Has anyone made this trip or similar?

Pros/cons…tips?

We are going to scenery,Liverpool FC, history, and wildlife.

I've never been to either but started to plan a Scotland trip focused mainly on driving. This link seemed very helpful. Good luck with your planning!

Would highly recommend figuring out some more of your trip and then asking more detailed questions. There's been a good bit of Scotland and England discussed on the Travel board.

ETA: London is a great city but its a huge city. I much prefer the smaller towns in England. Some of my favorite days traveling anywhere are touring a small random castle in England and then going to a pub, allowing the kids to be kids in the outdoor space, and enjoying a nice afternoon in the beer garden. I've had some great meals in pubs. Its nice to go grab a pint and chat with some locals in non touristy spots.

We spent some time between the two. Supposed to be golf trip but I wrecked my bike the week before we left. Spent time with Dad who no longer golfed because of back issues while others played. Lots of fun, started in London for a few days, then short flight to Edinburgh, Gleneagles, and St Andrew’s. Back to London to fly home. Stay in Gleneagles and Edinburgh were highlights for me. Would love to return to see sites we missed.

The Cotswolds for scenery in the fall. We took the Secret Cottage tour a couple of years ago out of Moreton-in-Marsh and recommend that. History and scenery. In Liverpool take the Beatles tour and visit the Lennon and McCartney childhood homes.

London is worth at least a week all by itself, I could easily spend a month there and enjoy myself every day.

Spitballing some high points of the rest of England:

Liverpool: See Beatles shite

Take a private Black Cab tour

Even if you're not a fan, you'll thank me later.

Stonehenge is stupendous

Stratford-upon-Avon, the Cotswolds in general.

The City of Bath

The City of Bristol

Devon & Cornwall

Oxford or Cambridge are must-see, I'd choose Oxford if I could only go to one.

Blenheim Palace is near to Oxford UNESCO Link

It's the Churchill family ancestral manse.

Portsmouth is great

Kent, Canterbury

You have a decision to make as to transportation.

I rent a car outside of London.

You can do trains & buses but obviously you'll lose some flexibility (and accessibility to some remote places).

That'll give you a bunch to see

PS: If you have a Harry Potter fan in the group, you'll have scads of things to see for them.

Went 7 years ago. Flew into Glasgow to see Ryder Cup. Edinburgh has more to do but couldn’t get a room there. Train service in Scotland was easy. Castles, sheep, golf & scotch. Fun place.

Took a Virgin Rail 1st class to London. Very nice. London has a ton of things to see. Best day was a small group trip to Stonehenge, Bath, and Salsbury. Would stay in Bath.

Heard good things about Whales. On my bucket list.

If you want nature and wildlife, Cotswolds or Cairngorms parks are the ticket.

In Liverpool I stay at the Adelphi, which is interesting. As Liverpool was once a big embarkation point for the trans-atlantic steamers, the Adelphi was the nicest grand hotel. It is no longer this nice. If you choose to stay there, make sure you have a big and relatively expensive room. It will still be a bit tired but you are staying in a huge historic room. Do not skimp or you will be in a grubby awful small room. But it's very historic and interesting, our room last time was all hardwood panel with huge windows looking out over the town.

I would add Brighton to that list, somewhere in the top 5-6. Easy day trip from London.

Bizarrely, my wife - who was not a Beatles superfan nor a soccer fan (Everton for me) - looks back on Liverpool as one of favorite stops in a lot of European/UK trips. She found it depressing, but fascinating.

So while I agree Liverpool on paper isn't elite, it's unique and opinions may very. We'll likely take our son back in a few years when Bramley Moore is finished.

ETA - I just saw your ranking - WTF. I'd spend a year in Liverpool before a week in Birmingham. Gross.

I'll add The Lake District in England to the list. Really beautiful area with lots of quaint little villages. Wordsworth spent most his life in this area and much of his writing is set here. It can get really crowded in the summer though.

I have done two separate trips in the last few years.

2016 -- London, Kent (see Dover Castle), Oxford, Bath

2018 -- Edinburgh, Stirling, Inverness, Skye

Seeing both Scotland and England in one trip is too ambitious, unless you're planning on 3 weeks.

My next trip over there will cover Glasgow, Iona, and the distilleries of Isla.

Must sees: Bath, Oxford, Edinburgh.

Both counties really deserve a trip of their own. For instance, I would line Scotland along these lines:

Fly into Edinburgh - 3 days
Train to St. Andrews - 1 day
Train to a small town between Edinburgh and Inverness (we did Pitlochry) - 1 day
Train to Inverness - 2 days - explore Loch Ness and distilleries from here
Train ride from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh - amazing scenery on the trip
We had to get a car at this point to go Portree on the Isle of Skye - great scenery, hiking and nature - spend 2 days here
Car back to Kyle of Lochalsh were we took train to Spean Bridge - 1 day
Take the Jacobite Steam Train to Glasgow - amazing scenery - spend 1-2 days in Glasgow, travel home.

England - there is really two much to do in 10-12 days so you have to make choices. In depth London is probably worth a week. Some other towns in England that I have stayed and would be great for 2 nights each include:

Windsor
Bath
St. Ives
Brigthon
Bourton-on-water
Oxford

And this is really just south and west of London. This is easily a two week trip.

Took a tour by a Black Cab/Blue Badge driver. These fellows have to license to drive you to destinations, but to be your private tour guide. Find one on-line or I might recommend our guide if need be.
Guy was fantastic. Drive London and showed us things many will never see. Try finding the last fart lamp on your own.
