Just returned from a 9 day road trip through Scotland and will summarize it for anyone interested.
Day 1: Flew into Edinburgh picked up the car and drove to St Andrews. Wife and I dont play golf but we thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Stayed at the old course hotel which I highly recommend.
Day 2: Drove to Aberfeldy- went out with Highland Safaris(would recommend a half day with these guys, take you deep into the mountain on old defenders and we spotted a couple of stags) Then checked out Aberfeldy Distillery, then drove to Aviemore and stayed at the Cairngorms Hotel. Aviemore is a Ski town with some great pubs and live music
Day 3: Drove to Inverness, town was ok.. lots of shops were shut with it being this time of year. Checked out Culloden and Clava Clairns (wife is huge outlander fan) then stayed at Culloden House Hotel. I could not recommend this place enough. This is where Bonnie Prince Charlie Stayed before the fateful battle. Great service.
Day 4: Drove to Isle of Skye. Stopped along the way at Lochness then headed to Portree and went to Kilt Rock.
Checked into Portree Hotel. Had dinner at Dulse and Brose. GOAT Scallops
Day 5: Hiked to Man of Storr, difficult hike and we are in our late 20's. Worth it if you have 2 hours. Check out the Talisker Distillery it is very much worth the extra drive on Skye. Then drove to Inverlochy Castle in Ft William
Day 6-9 Drove to Edinburgh dropped the car off and stayed at the Balmoral Hotel. Cannot recommend this place enough. We were there at Robert Burns night and went to the Royal Yatch Britannia for a formal dinner. The Yatch is a must see in EDI along with the castles and Johnny Walker experience.
Let me know if any of you are travelling to Scotland or have any questions. I cannot recommend this country enough. The people are the friendliest I have encountered in Europe.

In Portree, ate at the Isles Inn - one of the greatest atmospheres I've ever encountered, just hanging out with the locals.

Inverlochy Castle

Since it was winter, I'm guessing you missed out on the midges?
Next time, you should take a couple of days to explore the Border Regions as well.

Nice! Did you eat the haggis? I want to visit Burns' farm and the pub he used to drink at in Dumfries. Then head to Islay to visit Laphroaig, Bruichladich and Ardbeg.

Driving question. Was your car an automatic and how did you adjust to driving on the opposite side?

And you didn't even Falkland Fife?
But seriously, sounds like a fun trip.
Explorer Pass is a great value if you want to castle hop & hit other historic sites.

My recommendation to American drivers is to always rent Automatic transmission vehicles in the UK.
Reasons (not limited to but including):
You are shifting the transmission with the wrong hand
You are driving on unfamiliar roads
The signage/layout of those roads and the customs of the drivers there are substantively different than the US
The width of roads and blind corners and hills there make steering and braking the car the only things you want to be concerned with
The cost of upgrading to Automatic Transmission is expensive.
So is wrecking.
Buy the insurance there if your card doesn’t specifically cover it (and most US cards do not cover it)
Most US domestic Automobile Insurance policy’s coverage does not extend to UK car rentals
