We were planning this trip pre-COVID and for obvious reasons it was delayed, but we’re finally going in March of next year. Starting to get really excited as we’ve been talking about plans.
Who else here has gone and what was your experience like?

We loved our trip. Getting there is expensive but incredible values once
You’re there. We spent time in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Kariega Game Reserve.

Cape Town, Franschoek, Sabi Sands
Drove the coast road from Franschoek to Boulders Beach and up Chapman's Peak Drive.
Good stuff. I have a linked review in the pinned thread.

I was born there. Just be incredibly careful and stay in touristy areas.
Don’t put anything too valuable in your luggage, baggage handlers are known to steal from it.

I am going in early January for two weeks. I'm staying five nights at the Protea Hotel Kruger Gate. The summer (there) is hot, and the vegetation means that some animals are harder to see, and the risk of malaria is higher than in winter, but it's when I can go.
I haven't decided what I am going the rest of the time. I might dive in Sodwana Bay, or I might do some hiking in the Drakensberg range. Or, I might leave the country and see Victoria Falls.

I’m going next year for a week to bird hunt.

Just got back from 2 weeks in Africa. SA, Bostwana, Zambia and Zambezi. The people in the hospitality industry are fabulous. The glamping tents riverside were a once in a life time experience. They go out of their way to be welcoming and go above and beyond with service Food, wine, restaurants are super cheap. We stayed at inclusive game lodges for the most part. We saw and stayed in Vic Falls, Chobe River, Plianesberg National Park, Capetown, Stellenbosch, Cape of Good Hope. The only painful part are the border crossings. Typical government- wants your visa $ and zero efficiency.

Met a nice lady in a Spanish class here in Bham that escaped as well. She said South Africa is on the same path as Zimbabwe. Scary times over there.

I visited back in 2006 with my girlfriend at the time and it remains one of the top countries I've had the pleasure of visiting. The dollar stretches very far, once you get there.
Spent five nights binging on Pinotage and Petite Sirah between Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl, eating some of the best quality food and snacking on biltong. Drove back to Cape Town to do Table Mountain before flying out to Johannesburg.
Spent two nights in Joberg (my old man was living there) before heading to Kruger for a two night stay and a safari. The food in Jozi was pretty good but we didn't venture out too late after nightfall or too far off the reservation. I ate ostrich, eland, and kudu which was a really nice experience.
It's unreal how close you can get to these animals on the safari. Nothing as close as the domesticated zebra at Global Wildlife in Hammond but, I did see an elephant almost flip a small car. The Sundowner custom (after the safari) is a nice relaxing experience. It's basically drinks on the veranda during the sun set to talk about the animals you saw.
After Kruger we drove over to Maputo, Mozambique to eat lunch where I had some of the best mackerel I've ever eaten, then we flew out to Durban which has a large Indian and Malaysian population that is reflected in the local cuisine. Really good curry. After one night it was another plane to Cape Town to hop back across the Atlantic home.
It was such a great experience that my wife and I are planning on having our 10 year anniversary there.
Have fun, brother.

I just booked my flight for 2023. Any tips on surviving 15hrs on a plane??

I flew United's IAH-SYD flight a few years ago, which is 17 hours.
Sit next to small people if possible. Bring ample reading, watching, and listening material. Bring a power bank to recharge your phone, in case the outlet at your seat is broken. Make sure that you have an eye mask and earplugs, because there might be a screaming baby in the row behind you, and the person next to you might have a reading light on when you want to sleep. Brink snacks, in case you don't like the food that you're served. Get up and walk around regularly, so that you don't end up with DVT in your legs.

In my experience, Benadryl or an upgrade.
Benadryl is cheaper.

Really great review - thank you!
I only know the rough details of the itinerary right now (I’m not the trip planner), but I know we will do some time in the wine country and some time on a preserve doing safari things.
The one request I’ve made is I want to bungee jump off that famous bridge.

Did a Safari in Limpopo in July 2021. Had the time of our lives. Can’t wait to go back.
RSA is very inexpensive once you arrive. Getting there tends to be the biggest expense.
Kruger and Mapungubwe are amazing.
As others have mentioned. This isn’t the place to show off your new Rolex.
I didn’t take in Cape Town or Stellenbosh when I was there. Top of my priorities next time.

My bad Teddy. I meant to go to the stickied thread and check your review out but didn't get around to it until this morning.
Man those views are incredible and I'm extremely encouraged by the dining situation after looking at all the food you posted! I need to get a better sense of our full travel itinerary (it's been told to me but I don't remember) and compare where we are going to where you went!
