If you were to plan an extended trip out of country would you plan yourself or get guidance from travel agent?

I'd plan it myself.

Depends on how much work you want to do planning. I've had friends do either and they seemed to be happy both times.

Agent will take care of setting everything up and even though you give input, you are kind of at the mercy of who/what they know.

Flipside is how many hours do you want to spend planning everything.

Depends on your comfort in doing things yourself and how much time you want to put into it. Travel agents have their place for those that don't want all the hassles and are willing to sacrifice a little spontaneity. And just because they plan things for you doesn't mean you're entirely locked into every little detail.

Where would you like this to go OP? Are you just looking to start a discussion or looking for suggestions?

The reason I ask is because your question is like, what's your favorite park in Disney and if you only had one day where would you go?

Without more details about the trip you are considering, your preferences, etc. the question is really too broad.

Travel agents have their place especially booking cruises, all inclusives, and package deals. I rarely do that stuff but if I did I would consider one.

Do it yourself.

Do your research on Trip Advisor. You can get better advice on tigerdroppings than most travel agents can give you. I hardly use travel agents anymore

If I am going to a single location, I am doing it myself. If I am going to be bouncing around multiple major cities, travel agent - primarily for logistics and to maximize time to see the "must see" touristy shite

Will never use a travel agent again for an extended trip. Use GLOBUS. They do everything. Much easier.

Globus

Myself. The planning is half the fun and you learn about little things that a travel agent doesn’t know. They don’t do familiarization trips like they used to do.

I enjoy planning trips. I’d only do it if it was cheaper somehow.

Go check the website out for youself. Put in a destination of your choice and look at the itineraries. They give you the itineraries and all of the "must do's". It's a package deal. Only thing you do is pay one fee. Very user friendly system with very easy traveling.

Here you go

I also enjoy doing the research and doing it myself. I always have a sneaking feeling though that I’m overlooking something important or missing seeing something that a travel agent could have remedied, had I used one.

Or booked a hotel at a substandard place that the agent would have warned me about.

So far, that hasn’t happened, but if it were to happen, it would cost me money, inconvenience, and time.

So that slight suspicion nags me, but not to the point of going to a travel agent.
