Booked a trip with a company, but their travel insurance is 799/per person. The total cost of the trip will be around 10k.

Any tips/tricks on trip insurance companies?

Check the actually cancellation policy of the trip.

Check what your credit card offers.

We booked a trip for next spring which includes a Viking cruise.

We got good deals on most things but the trip insurance through Viking was going to be very expensive.

We bought the insurance through insuremytrip.com which is part of Nationwide Insurance Company. It was much cheaper.

I have some business in the business. Travel insurance is a racket unless you have specific items you want to insure like a hurricane protection, elderly parent, medical issue, etc. There’s absolutely nothing for just ‘general protection’.

So OP, what are you trying to insure against? Insurance especially travel insurance is for things you can not afford. I would highly recommend looking into refundable options and self insuring.

Travel insurance requires a documented issue to trigger the coverage. You have to have something like a death, hospitalization, missed flight, etc with paperwork to receive coverage.

If you’re traveling internationally, try UHC Safe Trip. You can purchase intl medical insurance and repatriation in addition to traditional travel insurance.

I’ve bought policies with Generali and Allianz. The only one I had to make a claim on was the Generali one. Needed documentation, receipts and a covid test from one of our group. I expected a wait due to claim volume. They Zelle’d me nearly 12k Within 24 hours. I guess we were lucky.

Oh and I’ve had major travel issues while uninsured or using only the CC. Nothing medical but trip interruptions where we didn’t make it to our destination. Strikes. Lost luggage. Chase United reserve’s protections through eclaims SUCK!! Now that was a scam.

I am going on a trip in Europe with Viking next spring. We can cancel before 120 days from the trip and only lose $100 per person.

Knowing that, I plan to purchase travel insurance after that window.

I have visited all the websites mentioned. What should we look for in coverage? How much medical is needed?

Thanks

Thanks, we will be doing a Viking Cruise as well.

I just want to insure that if we do get sick, delayed/cancelled flight, or something happens to one of our family members, we would not foot a 10k trip that we did not take.

We are taking the Bordeaux river cruise. We got a good price on the cruise and airfare. I don’t know why their trip insurance prices are so far out of line.

Couldn't agree more and I'm not necessarily against insurance in general but it's best use is when you're insuring something so valuable that loss would cause severe financial distress in an unfortunate occurrence. With so credit card companies offering "protection" cancellation (or at least change without penalty) policies normally available (sometimes at higher costs) people spend millions of dollars a year on these policies for the warm and fuzzy feeling that's not worth the paper it would be printed on.

Yep. We had to cancel a trip to Aspen bc my FIL was not doing well with cancer several years ago. They basically to me to kick rocks. I bought the coverage for the first time ever at my wife’s request bc he was up and down from month to month at the time.

The benefit of buying it through the company is they are more clear on the coverage and going to be more likely to help you out if it’s a questionable event like a hospitalization. Something like a European cruise is unsettling because you have to travel on multiple flights many hours away and many of the passengers are older, so I get it.

Also realize that if you don’t purchase it right away at the time of your reservation some insurances won’t cover certain items like pre existing conditions. So if you have cancer and get hospitalized because of it, it may not be covered where as a hospitalization would other wise be covered.

Yup, b/c they will screw you over on those things. We use iTravelInsured and got 100% screwed over. We had a 10 trip to TCI and had to miss 1 day. We were flying from DFW to MIA to TCI. The flight at DFW was delayed due to a weight issue with the plane, and we missed the connection in MIA to TCI. We then had to come out of pocket in MIA b/c the kept our bags (rookie move not packing in carry ons). When we added up what we thought we would get for several of the things spelled out in the policy it was about $1,600.00. Which would have covered our missed night at the hotel and what we spent in MIA. What we got back was about $365.00, not even what the policy cost.

B/c it was a weight issue and not a mechanical issue we did not qualify for the missed connection and b/c we didn't miss a full 24hr of the trip (it was about 21hrs as we landed in TCI on Thur at 9 instead of Wed at 12) we didn't qualify for the trip interruption. So make sure you read the fine print.

Travel insurance cost of 7% means if you self insure it takes you 14.3 trips to cover your cost, so will you have a completely lost trip every 14.3 trips? If part of it is refundable or otherwise flexible you are probably better off without coverage.

The other thing I hear people want it for is Covid. Well if it’s a big family trip and someone gets Covid no policy is paying for the entire family to stay home. You maybe get one or two people refunded at most. People want it to cover the whole family not being together because one person gets sick and that’s just never going to happen.
