United Basic Economy carry on a transatlantic flight, domestic leg question.

I see on united it says basic economy can't carry on except for transatlantic flights.
I didn't catch this at first. But this was the shortest flight and I didn't see the positive in paying $150 more for economy when it was only $65 more to pick my seats.
Anyway. It says people on transatlantic flights can carry on. Domestic flights have to check.
So can I carry on from MSY to HOU? before going on to AMS?
I have a backpack style suitcase/bag.
I don't want to check.

I agree that's a mouthful. In my experience you can usually gate check bags in that scenario. The issue is likely its a smaller commuter plane that doesn't have the overhead bins large enough for a standard carry on. So you literally have no where to put a standard carry on.

It's a 737.
The issue is the class. I was trying to save a couple of bucks.
So I decided to message United. I was told I'm on a Transatlantic itinerary and am allowed a carry on and a checked bag for no charge.

As far as I know, you can carry on (personal item) for basic economy with United, it just has to fit under the seat in front of you. You aren't allowed roller bags that take bin space.

You're fecking brave to do this on a flight over the Atlantic. There's no f*&& way I'm doing that.
I just (two hours ago) booked a flight to BCN via FRA, and the basic economy ticket was about 6% cheaper than regular economy on United (on Lufthansa metal, the splendid 747-800.)

You get what you pay for. You need to pay to upgrade to economy to get a bag on without checking. As others said, saving a few bucks for a flight over the pond is a bad move

Just did the same thing to Europe on United. Brought a carry on bag and a backpack. Tickets were about 20% cheaper by booking the Lite fair. Also didn't want to risk airline losing all our luggage or having it stolen. We ended up having to check our carry ons in Newark anyway because they ran out of overhead space. Didn't charge though. And saved us over $600.

You're wrong. Transatlantic flights on basic economy follow the same rules as economy. Messing you can have a bag carry on. But have to pay for checked luggage. I've confirmed with United.
It's a Transatlantic iternerary. Ergo bags are okay. So I saved $200. If I buy stuff I'll pay to bring a bag back.
Three people have said it is bad to save, but haven't said why.
I
Already picked my seats on all 4 flights. Paid
I already confirmed I can bring a carry on and a personal bag.
So.. what's the difference? I'll board group 5?
I'm sitting in 4th class it won't matter. I'm in the 30's every flight.
Now the only second guessingI'm doing is not booking the Delta even though it's 4 hours longer flight. It was same price and we have a Delta card so I would get baggage and all.
Still I got baggage with united.

My next hack I do. Is I erase my boarding group number from my boarding pass. Every airline will announce.
"If you don't have a group number, board in group X" where X is ALWAYS in the middle. It's group 5 for 9 group American and group 4 for 5 group United.
Yes when they scan you, your boarding info shows up. But they aren't looking at that. They just want to hear the ding that your Okay to get on.
On crowded planes you'll sometimes see an employee tagging personal bags "as guaranteed to fit" put that tag on your carry on. Again. When you get called you have the yellow tag not the dreaded pink gate check tag.

Are you short becaause I cannot fit in the seats you're sitting in. I'm tall, not fat.
