It doesn't look like the freshly named Cleveland Guardians checked to see if the name was taken first before announcing their new name last week. Apparently there's a roller derby team with the SAME NAME in the SAME CITY. Now they could make some bank...

Marketing 101. One of the first things you do is check when designing a new logo / team name, is check for copyrights and usage rights. DUMB. Should have been the Cleveland Rockers anyway.

How do we know that the Indians didn't check with them first and buy the name, website and all of that? The roller derby team didn't comment. Maybe they agreed to let the Indians/Guardians handle any media interactions.

not a problem unless the public is likely to be confused about the two. UGA and Miss State are both Bulldogs. LSU and Auburn are both Tigers. Nobody in the consuming public is confused.

It's a major problem. The roller derby team copywrote "Cleveland Guardians", not just guardians. The Indians will either find a new bane or buy it from the roller derby team.
