Recommendations on the order:
Streets of Laredo or Comanche Moon?

(BTW, a top 5 book in my opinion. Couldn't put it down.)

Deadman's Walk or Comanche Moon. McMurtry doesn't write in any type of chronological order so it doesn't really matter. Streets of Laredo is worth the read, but is my least favorite book out of the series.

What he said^^^^^^
Note: Deadman's Walk is it's own complete story. Comanche Moon is really just filling in the gap in between their young days and their old timer days. That said, I kind of liked CM better.

To me, Gus and Call are inseparable. It's why Gus' death is so affecting in LD. Love me some Call, but by himself, he's a lot less interesting.

First off if you haven't read OR watched the Lonesome Dove mini series (which came out 30 years ago)by now you should be horse whipped. Secondly, knowing that Gus dies is no reason whatsoever to not read the book.

FWIW I knew he died from
mini series when I was a kid. Didn’t affect the read what-so-ever. (At least for me)

Haha!
Guilty. Honestly it sounded like a Harlequin novel and series and I never gave it any thought until this board brought it forth.

It never made it under the rock in which I live.

It's a great audiobook as well. About 30 hours though

I read the book before I ever watched the mini-series,and to be honest,it was a let down.

Wasn't there one called Kiowa Moon?
Or am I disremembering, and maybe it was Comanche Moon?

The one I'm thinking about was damn brutal.

Just checked wikipedia, yeah, that was Comanche Moon I was thinking about.

Definitely recommend this One.

Most of McMurtry's stuff is great though.

Some of the more obscure ones that I really liked:
All My Friends Are Going To be Strangers- really funny.
Texasville - also funny
Zeke and Ned ( might be Ned And Zeke)- I think this one is based on a true story.

A grape changes colors when it sees another grape...or something to that effect. However Gus didn't know what it meant, only that he liked Latin and thought it sounded nice. That's one of my favorite parts of the book, about a 30 minute description about everything written on their sign and how it got there.

That’s also one of my favorite exchanges in the the book.

Woodrow Call:
...and if that ain't bad enough you got all them Greek words on there, too.

Gus McCrae:
I told you, Woodrow, a long time ago it ain't Greek, it's Latin.

Woodrow Call:
Well what does it say in Latin? [Gus blusters some gibberish] For all you know it invites people to rob us.

Gus McCrae:
Well the first man comes along that can read Latin is welcome to rob us, far as I'm concerned. I'd like a chance t' shoot at a educated man once in my life.

Not only that, he misspelled it. It is “videndo” not vivendo. (BTW, it was a rhetorical question. )

I just started part 2 and that sign section is fantastic.

People ask me what the book is about and while there is a plot obviously, the plot moves very slowly.

The brilliance of the book is in the day to day interactions that bring the characters to life.

There should be a statute of limitations on spoilers.

If you haven’t seen a movie or read a book (particularly very famous ones) after they have been out for a year or so, you don’t get to complain about spoilers.
