I'm looking for some good true crime books. I've read a lot of Ann Rule books. I like her stuff but a lot of it is dated. TIA

I really enjoyed Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi. He was the lead prosecutor in the Manson Family trials and the book is about both that experience and the murders and subsequent investigation in general.

Helter Skelter has been disproven and is almost entirely made up by Bugliosi.
If you want to read about the Manson murders, check out Chaos by Tom O’Neill.

Erik Larson has written two true crime books that meet your criteria. He has written on other subjects as well.
'Devil in the white city' is very good.
'Thunderstruck' was ok.
His style is to take two events (one being a murder) the other is a historical event that parallels the murder story.

By who? Oh, by Tom O'Neill? A hack that's trying to push his own book on the case.
Bugliosi prosecuted the case. I'd say that he had pretty good access to the facts...even if LAPD did a horrible job of investigating the Tate and Labianca murders.

Upvote for Devil in the White City! Great book about HH Holmes and the Chicago World's Fair.

Wiseguy or Casino Nicholas Pileggi, I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt (although its probably bullshite they based The Irishman on it), Killers Of The Flower Moon by David Grann, Homicide A Year On The Killing Streets by David Simon (the beginning of Homicide Life On The Street and The Wire tv shows).
