AD says they expect a decision by today but they also can’t fire him for cause. What’s preventing Lane from just choosing to keep coaching as long as he has LSU’s blessing?

Verge already said they would let a coach finish the playoffs and miss the portal window if it was the right guy.

It would be stupid for everyone to allow Lane to keep coaching at Ole miss if he’s gonna be LSU’s coach

I would think that they could find a reason to “suspend” him

It would be very stupid for him to miss the portal window.

The AD is his boss. He can surely sit him down in a meeting and demand an answer one way or another. What that looks like after that, who knows?

He can say "sign your extension or you're fired"

Its interesting to think through. I think Ol' Miss could fire him with cause if he signs with LSU and dismiss him immediately. I assume his contract has a clause that he cannot do anything intentionally that would be detrimental to the school or the brand and signing a contract to coach another school would likely qualify for that.

That being said, they would give up the buyout money due to them if Kiffin resigns.

I expect Kiffin to ask to coach through the playoffs, LSU to say yes, Ol Miss to say no, then Kiffin will resign because he's an adult who isn't a complete retard.

Not fired for cause, but his actions can be deemed detrimental to team and suspended. We have to pay him a salary, we do not have to allow him to coach.

It is not very complex and once notified of job search and pending decision to leave, the buyout process begins. LSU will be paying Ole Miss a few million, unless they negotiate something new.

There are $36 million reasons this will not happen.

He will not be fired, but he will not be on sidelines. This is within authority of AD. Coaches can be suspended, and recieve pay.

No they cannot and Lane knows this.

He wants them to fire him that way he’s not the bad guy and he gets out of any contractual obligation.

It’s a big game of chicken.

Ole Miss was never going to fire him. They would pull their extension offer essentially making the decision for him. Unless he wants to stay at Ole Miss on his current contract

Offsets for taking another coaching job. The actual number would be peanuts.

Except for the part where the only chance they have to win the playoff is with Lane coaching

Every day this keeps going makes Ole Miss look even more desperate. Carter keeps kicking the can down the road, just hoping and praying Kiffin has a change of heart. Thats Ole Miss only chance he stays. They stall and guilt him into staying.

Yes and indecision is his leverage.
