Many schools have tried to hire high school coaches. None have been successful.

Read the thread. He was a college assistant before becoming a head coach.

None of them went from being the head coach at a high school directly to being the head coach of an FBS program.

The only one I can think of off top of my head that came close is John Grass. He went from HS to JSU as OC for one year before taking over when Bill Clark left for UAB. Plus, they were still FCS at the time too.

It hasn't been done at the FBS level that I can remember.

Art Briles as well

He went from HS to being an assistant at Texas Tech prior to his first collegiate HC job.

Jeff Traylor went from HS to assistant jobs Texas, SMU, and Arkansas prior to being HC at UTSA.

Joey McGuire went from HS to being an assistant at Baylor from 2017-2021 prior to being a collegiate head coach.

I already mentioned him as the only example I can think of, although it's a small sample size and he's at FCS. There are probably several examples of this happening at the FCS level.

But yes, he would be one example.

You may be right. The success rate may not be 0%. But I can't think of anyone. From Gerry Faust at Notre Dame to Tony Sanchez at UNLV, all failures.

The track record isn't great:

Tony Sanchez (UNLV) - 20-40
Bob Commings (Iowa) - 18-37
Gerry Faust (Notre Dame/Akron) - 73-79-4
Todd Dodge (North Texas) - 6-37

Not saying it isn’t a great accomplishment, because turnarounds like that are never easy…but I’ve seen first hand the amount of transfers that occur when a former well known pro athlete gets a head job at a school…and this was happening at public schools.

I’m willing to bet the makeup of the team changed quite a bit in those two years considering it’s some private school.

This isn’t shocking If you listen to him on Russillo’s job

He clearly has been more than willing to flex his football mind.

With that said, he has run a really good high school program and been running elite 11 forever. He has to be extremely plugged in to recruiting circles and coaching circles.

He could be great. Just like Deion could be great. But if I’m an AD, I’m not taking that gamble.

There are way too many good coaches out there.

I like the hire and not a retread like Holtz.

He definitely loves to name drop and hear himself talk, but it’s also a good listen when he’s on, so I kind of like him.

UAB should just hire Jeff Monken and run the triple option, or talk Paul Johnson out of retirement and do the same

Well...he's shown he knows how to recruit. Also, this is a school that has less than 500 High School students. Their one loss last year was by 8 points to Murfreesboro Oakland (a public school with just under 2000 students and a coach that is 187-19 over 15 years).

Still...your point is valid...if you are a private school close to Nashville and have a high profile coach and unlimited funds, it goes a long way in out-talenting your competition. 24/7 shows Lipscomb with 5 players in Tennessee's top 100.
