This is about to be a beautiful era of Notre Dame football, or an absolute disaster, but I am strapped in and ready.

Freeman will most likely be gone in 3 years.

In way over his head.

The only way he makes it is if the OC\DC and all of the ND assistants that are staying on babysit and hold his hand (Kind of like Shrimpy in 2019) until he can take the pacifier out of his mouth.....

I think ND fell into “let’s make a hire and save our PR in the short term”. Which Freeman might turn out to be a great coach but it’s a big risk.

There's is no special blueprint/guideline when it comes to hiring a coach. How is he a big risk?

Every other year the media/fans puts some "hot name" coach on a pedestal who overachieved at a Group of 5 school for a few years... and 3-4 years later they flame out and get fired from a P5 job.

Think Freeman has a chance to be good there. He has taken their recruiting up a notch and you can expect very good to great defense under him. I do wonder if there may be some risk with Rees kind of flying solo as the OC, I would actually view that as the biggest question mark for them.

Freeman has only shown that he can lead a defense.
Orgeron couldn’t even do that, and the mfr was the head man here. (Also, he’s a crazy good recruiter) Time will tell. Low floor, but his ceiling is limitless.

I think the limitations in place with the ND job will not do well for him. I think that is why it is a stupid idea to have just hired him in a panic for an extremely unlikely playoff spot bid where they will just get destroyed anyhow.

ND's academic requirements will negate much of the "great" recruiting ability he has. That is not what made Kelly successful compared to all the previous coaches. he wasn't learning on the job at ND and it was his 4th stop as a head coach.

I mean, you have Kirby at UGA doing well, but again, they are not anywhere near as restrictive on entry requirements as Notre Dame. It's the same reason Vandy will never truly be competitive for championships in football.

In the end, he may have a flash here and there, but they are in for a rude awakening when things go south even if only for a season.

The O hire was laughed at by many at the time, and had it not been for Burrow and Brady, LSU would've been an even bigger laughing stock for that hire. Again, cutting your teeth at a program with restrictions like ND is a massive challenge for anyone.
