Of course… but some ppl on this board are acting like the media was when CLK left for LSU. Pot meet kettle. You can’t be ok with the Lane move and not with Whittingham; and vice versa. This a good hire by M. We’ll see if with more resources he can stabilize a restart M to compete against Ost and I guess now Indiana (weird to say! But hope it’s not a one off for interesting)

The pressure at Michigan compared to a place he was at for 30 years while completely starting over.

Reminds me of aww shucks Mike Riley at Oregon State leaving his Mayberry comfort zone where if he won 6 games a year he had a lifetime contract to the unrealistic demands of the Nebraska fan base and Administration.

I dont see anyone criticizing him for the move here.

It was a smart move for him. My main issue is the media acting like this is a home run. It looks a lot like the BK hire

It’s not a BK hire because the media acted like BK was held back by ND. Marcus Freeman has shown that was a lie. Whitt did more with less for decades at Utah.

Did he? The coach before Whittingham won 92% of his games and the coach before him won 58% of his games- this dates back to 1990. Whittingham won 66%.

Maybe Utah is a good job

Yes but you may want to point out that when Urban was there they played in the Mountain West, not the Pac 12. Context matters.

Given the history of the program, probably better to say that Urban and Whittingham were by far their best two coaches.

Sure, but Whittingham had his most success in the Mountain West era too

For sure especially when you look around the B1G & there's only 3 schools to compete with & 8-9 guaranteed wins every year. If he can win one of the Oregon/PSU/OSU games a year he has an automatic spot in the playoffs.

I'm really curious to see how much they are paying him. I haven't seen that anywhere, just that it's a 5-year contract

ESPN reported 8.2 average annual value, 8 million in 2026.

You may have to include another B1G team in there.

Whittington would have been a good fit with his average 8-4 record had he been hired at Texas A&M. Sorry, 8-4 at Michigan is gonna get him fired.

AVERAGE HIRE AT BEST!

Bad hire, I think this ends poorly

He'll do fine as long as they let him get his daily 11am nap

And his 3pm nap

And hit the rack by 9:30pm

Kelly racked up G5 wins at Notre Dame. Whittingham has overseen the best 20 stretch of football in Utes history.

They are not comparable.

atrocious, non-fact based take. Cool bro!

He is there to stabilize program and he was the best fit for who was available. I don't think Biff would have been a better option

If he gets fired in a year and a half he will do that with life changing money and social security at his disposal

A bridge to what? Another shitshow search where you land on a last resort hire and hope to God he’s a decent choice?
last resort? Jim was the best coach in the market.

You mean the Michigan alum? For the only college job he was interested in? I'm sure same scenario will happen after KW goes to assisted living.
