I am perplexed by this reply and all the others in this thread.

It’s exactly what they should be doing if not worse

He’s their coach. He’s under contract. He’s been offered a massive extension.

There’s still a game left and they are on the playoffs.

And his family is on FL and BR.

frick that.

Can't blame Ole Miss. They want a coach in place for the portal opening. Not after it's closed.

Yeah, the responses in here are bizarre. OM has a good football team and needs to make good decisions in their own best interests. Lane Kiffin is not such a prodigious play calling genius that they should put up with this level of distraction.

This whole thing is shaping up to be the biggest Kiffin head fake ever. Master troll.

Doesn’t mean they can’t tho. The longer this goes on, the more they get screwed

Ole Miss is so incredibly stupid for how they played this.

How else could they do this? The spring signing period and portal needs to be pushed back to February like the original signing day was.

It's people who haven't thought it through, or don't understand negotiations.

Ole Miss's biggest leverage is to tell Lane to either commit to us, or go tell your team you're bailing on them as they have worked to put themselves in a position to play for a championship. If he choses to leave, he was ALWAYS going to leave. Only now OM knows that and can plan accordingly.

The money is probably close from all sides. However, OM is the only school that has the leverage of forcing Lane to bail on his team. It's the right play if OM wants to keep him.

Not at all. It's probably the best move by Ole Miss and that is the latest date that they could ask for a decision taking into account the playoffs and thereafter the transfer portal. And Ole Miss is forcing his hand on walking out on a team that is most likely headed for the playoffs. Ole Miss will need to be hunting a new coach starting on 11/28 at the latest, and especially taking into account the many openings right now.

The only issue is that this essentially means they would fire him…he has a buyout.

Worse he probably has a buyout he would owe THEM if he left. This potentially puts them in a situation where they owe a buyout rather than receiving one.

That would be stupid to do.

This makes even more sense than 11/28. Ole Miss needs a few days with the interim coach to get ready for the Egg Bowl, which is always a toss up.

Is ole Miss really dumb enough to do that while chasing the best shot at a title in the last 60 plus years?

No, you're wrong. The only leverage they have in this deal is time, the longer they let this play out the better chances they have at keeping Kiffin. All of these schools that have openings are under the gun to get someone in place with the early signing period. They should allow all of those schools to rush into a decision, not take steps to speed up the process! They should be telling Kiffin, here's your offer, and we'd love to have you as long as we can. Take the no pressure approach, allow him to feel that, and appreciate that.

They are quite literally pushing him out the door with setting a deadline.

They have no shot at a title if their head coach is not 100% locked in.

You’re making the mistake of thinking that retaining Lane Kiffin is their program’s primary objective, or that him leaving is the worst case scenario.

The actual worst case scenario is that a distracted Lane Kiffin torpedoes their playoff chances and then bounces after the transfer portal opens when it’s too late for them to conduct their own search of strong candidates.

I don't think programs care all that much about the ESD. Otherwise, that is a reasonable counterargument. LSU, Florida, etc, are going to want their HC in place by, at least, mid/late December. If all the jobs are filled by that time, Kiffin has no choice but to stay with OM.

Of course, the flip side is he bails in late December/early January and Ole Miss is left in a position where all of the candidates are taken and they are rushed to fill a spot ahead of the transfer portal opening...which is where OM is building their team now. They can't afford to not have things in place when the portal opens.

And they are delusional to ever think they’d hold on to Kiffin if he was successful. The entire world knew it was a stepping stone for him
