Pretty underwhelming even for USM’s standards

Southern Miss would be best suited just hiring a great head coach from a lower level college who has run a program and won consistantly.

I'm onto you, State fan

Bobby Collins - never a head coach prior to USM. 48-30-2

Jim Carmody - never a head coach prior to USM. 37-29

Curley Hallman - never a head coach prior to USM. 23-13*

Jeff "Bowers" Bower - never a head coach prior to USM. 119-83-1

Larry Fedora - never a head coach prior to USM. 34-19

Ellis Johnson - Citadel and Gardner Webb HC. 0-12

Todd Monken - never a head coach prior to USM. 13-25 (and pretty much the best 13-25 possible)

Jay Hopson - Alcorn State HC. 28-23

Will Hall - West Georgia HC. 14-30

So the guys with no prior head coaching experience have delivered 274 wins vs. 199 losses. That's a 57.9% rate.

The experienced HCs delivered 42 wins against 65 losses. That's a winning percentage of 39.3%.

I really think that's a large enough sample to call this a pattern. I think USM is just a very different job. If you come in thinking it's going to be West Georgia or Alcorn State, you are going to fail badly. I was actually reasonably impressed that Ellis Johnson got The Citadel to .500 his last year there. Can't be easy to win there, right?

The one guy with HC experience who did OK was Hopson, and he'd been extensively involved with USM so he knew what he was getting into.

What's so different about USM? Well, maybe this has changed, but about 10 years ago USM was one of only 2 non-P5 teams that was the most popular team in its own city. Orlando wasn't a UCF city. Ruston wasn't a Tech town. Hell, even Greenville, NC wasn't an ECU town. And Hattiesburg is bigger than most college towns, and located in a state with 2 SEC schools. You wouldn't expect USM to be one of those two G5 teams to own its own city, but they were. So that's one aspect of it.

I guess these FCS / D-II guys get to Hattiesburg unprepared for the fact that they're basically going to be subjected to P5 levels of scrutiny and can't handle it. I think it affects how they coach. Ellis Johnson and Will Hall both seemed to completely change their style at USM compared to what we'd seen before. I don't think they ever had the gumption to just call their own game and let the chips fall where they would.

Another thing to consider is that coaches who've succeeded at USM haven't had much success in the top job elsewhere. Bobby Collins would be the one exception, but, you know... he was cheating LOL.

People always talk about the money. I've never perceived some great inability to pay coaches, though. Hall was comfortably in the top half of SBC coaches in terms of salary.

So, IDK... there's something interesting going on there that I don't completely understand, but I don't particularly want another professional head coach trying to move up.

I would consider a retread... maybe not Skip Holtz, but someone like that but better. Steve Logan is too old now, but I remember thinking he'd have been a good dark horse candidate when they were looking in 2007 and 2011.

I wonder about a guy like Gene Chizik. He's dealt with the scrutiny. The money difference gives me pause.

Is it? Looks about even par to me.

On paper, Faulkner checks the right boxes, but I was not very impressed by him when he was at USM. I kind of think he was forced out... USM OC to "quality control assistant" at UGA is not even a lateral move.

Nix is OC at Auburn. So he has the right profile as well. I don't know how to feel about the fact that he's an alum. I hate it when USM does the "one of us" thing, e.g. Jay Ladner and Jeff Hammond.

Surtain doesn't have the resume yet.

I would agree with you other than a couple of the money guys are friends of mine and some of the names that have reached out to the AD (allegedly) surprised me. Guys that would take a paycut to be a head coach.

We'll see by the end of the month.

Chizik would probably not mind talking to them, but being from Florida, he might be more excited on a personal level to give it a go at FAU.

Southern Miss would be exciting for a new young head coach, but not a guy who's been around.

Bring your wife to Miami Florida? Or bring your wife to Hattiesburg?

Chiz is about 63. He's not going to be trying to climb anymore ladders I don't expect.

It was so sad when Jeff Bower lost his high school age daughter in a car wreck.

He disappeared off the scene just a few years later, probably no doubt from heartbreak.

What was the story with Hopson resigning after 1 game in 2020 season? Did he disagree with playing that year? Or with the fan restrictions?

It seems like that first game was fairly early and almost the same time frame as an opener in regular non-covid season.

But there is a lot of Ole Miss money especially with the medical community. Ole Miss and State used to get a lot of support. They rarely play each other anymore (if ever), so maybe Ole Miss and State supporters are better at showing support for a local who they consider a non-rival (which likely aggravates USM fans).

I do know some USM graduates, and it seems like the true diehard USM fans have to also deal with some of USM fans or alumni in area who started to cheer for Bama against Ole Miss and State and gradually shifted focus more to Bama especially with Saban’s success there (faster after the Ellis Johnson fiasco).

I’m hearing it’s between Marion from UNLV and Shanahan from Indiana, with the GT OC being last resort. Great first two choices, wouldn’t love the Faulkner hire tbh

Marion will have other options. I think Charles Huff at Marshall will interview and will likely get offered. That marriage is in rough shape and Huff has a lot of experience recruiting Mississippi.

Agreed, allegedly Marion’s mom is the one pushing him to take the USM job. If USM wants to get serious again, they’ll throw the sink at Marion because I think he’s going to be a great HC

Impressive if they can get one of them.

I'd roll the dice on Surtain. He's young but he's connected in football circles in New Orleans and South Florida.

He went to the AD after that game and said his heart wasn’t in it anymore and needed to step down.

Damn. He must have been dealing with some heavy shite if that’s how it happened.

Respect for the honest and having the balls to do that but damn. That’s rough
