He has enough talent at UT to where he has no business being ranked as low as some of his Ds have been lately. They've had a drop off, but its not like he was working with shite

For years Fulmer did a horrid job recruiting for defensive depth, here is the post I made on the subject comparing Tenn D classes with LSU D classes:

quote:

Depth of talent. To do a little recruiting comparison, this years possible seniors (2003-2004-2005 recruiting classes) This is ONLY defensive players.

Tennesee LSU
5* 2 1
4* 13 22
3* 12 13
1-2* 3 0(!)

More LSU defensive recruits during this period, despite the fact we had a very small class in 2004. Look at the kind of depth we build with 4*s compared to Tenn. The kind of depth Chavis did not have at Tennessee.

I tried to read through the forst few pages and thought 2 people said today Payton said Coach O was staying put

Yeah, Payton was asked about his staff next year with Marrone leaving for Syracuse. He was then asked about Orgeron and he simply said that he expects Orgeron to be back on the staff next year. Nothing earth shattering because he wouldn't say anything different at this point I wouldn't think......I mean, I can't picture him saying "yeah, coach O is actively seeking another job".

If Sean Payton said this morning Coach O is staying put, then where is the rumor he is coming here surfacing from?
And i dont mean Belowpar, I mean are there serious negotiations at this time that Sean Payton isnt aware of?

Just what I've read, it seems as though O was contacted at the HS championship games and has been in talks with LSU and UT. This might be that he is just trying to get a raise with the Saints or that he does want to return to coaching college kids and recruiting.

Truth is, no one really knows.

I just don't get why Miles will tell the media he likes an aggressive style of man D yet never makes a hire close to that. Are you just pandering to LSU fans telling them what they want to hear?

I mean if you like the soft zone just say thats the style you prefer.

Shouldn't Chavis be recruiting for defensive depth as well since he is the DC???

They had all the talent in the world when everyone jumped on the Manning, Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry bandwagon and the recruiting fell off after they left. They recruit nationally and not locally and caught Bama in a down swing. There is defensive talent at UT, maybe not as much as LSU, but that has to be attributed to Chavis as well imo.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet he stays with the Saints.
Suntiger's odds for O:
45% - stays with the Saints (using this to leverage more money and it pays more than DL coach at a university plus he won't have to move as Payton's not going anywhere anytime soon and he can wait for a DC job to open up somewhere.)
35% - goes to LSU (close to home, back to the college game)
20% - goes to Tenn (back to college and maybe more money than LSU)

To an extent, but if recruiting's not his thing, it's just not his thing. I don't remember Bo being a good recruiter.

Don't fret, J...don't fret.

If we can get O and Chavis, and a decent DB coach, we are ok.

something positive
quote:

So given all that, and Fulmer’s current struggles, isn’t there anything Majors would like to say about the current Vols coach.

Said the former coach: “Frankly, I think (defensive coordinator) John Chavis has saved his job for 10 years.”

Even on a team where the D coordinator is heavily involved in recruiting(which wouldn't have been UT) I don't think thats the case. The head coach is where the buck stops as far as recruiting numbers. If there is much more depth on offense than defense it is because thats how the head coach had it play out.
