Spoke to someone who played for Chavis at UT. This guy also played in the NFL. He said he was the best defensive coach he has been around in his career.

I honestly went in hoping to find that his total D was kinda average but his 3rd down D and scoring D were good plus maybe being halfway decent in turnovers.

Needless to say i came away kinda disappointed. to be fair i guess i should compare him to the rest of the SEC but I'm scared what i'd find.

I expected much higher numbers in the turnover area at least.

the 3rd down # is pretty terrible

Most like Walker, but think Chavis would be good if we get O.

Looks like Miles wants Chavis.

Oh crap, I hate Chavis. He's mediocre at best.

Double crap, we thought he was mediocre, but now he sucks.

That pretty well catches you up.

scoring D at 26 is a solid figure for an 8 year average especially since UT has been on a steady decline for the last 8 years. In the end isn't the score all that matters? :crossesfingers:

It is part of the 'bend but don't break' defense that he seems to play. There are negatives to say about everyone up for the job. There are positives about Chavis too. He has SEC experience and the people at UT seem to really like him. Which we know is difficult for any fanbase to say about a coach.

As far as Chavis in the booth, when did he start that? He wasn't coaching from the booth a few years back. Do we know why he moved to the booth?

so go with the average guy?

no one has stopped Florida. That's all I am saying. I wouldn't judge him for that.

if he is the average guy, who is the best choice?

More positive thoughts; not sure if this has been posted yet. Its a pretty honest evaluation of Chavis from a seemingly pretty knowledgeable Vol fan

the bottomline is to get the best available. He may not compare to the top 10 DCs out there. But, if they aren't available and willing to talk, you have to start at #11.

Just a question for the crowd...

Do you think while Miles is interviewing DC candidates, he tells them, "now look, fans here will crucify you for not running a super aggressive defense. I want you to run what you run...that's why we want to bring you here. But prepared to feel it in the media." Etc, etc?

Anybody?

no. Miles will not expect a dc to play a scheme in oerder to pacify a fans desire to blitz every down.

Oh yeah, I definitely agree with that.

I was just asking if you think he tells the candidates to prepare for the backlash when they don't blitz every down.

Chavis has always been more about players than scheme, but even in the last few years when Tennessee's talent level has decreased, he still finds ways to maximize what's out there. Even if he doesn't have NFL athletes, he'll put the right guy in the right spot to make a play with alarming consistency. And putting guys in the right position is why Eric Berry has seven interceptions this season on a team that's really not spectacular on the defensive front and doesn't pressure quarterbacks to make hurried throws.
quote:

WS: Personally, I was and I remain a huge fan of John Chavis. Tennessee defenses since his promotion to DC in 1995 have been in the top tier of the SEC almost every single season - his consistency to me is one of his greatest strengths. There's a percentage of Tennessee fans who've voiced displeasure at what he's done over the last few years, but when you look at the numbers to me those concerns came more out of a general dissatisfaction with the program instead of specific issues with the defense - the Vols are 4th nationally in total defense right now with an offense that's ranked 116th in the same category. With very few exceptions that can be attributed to inexperience and having to play Florida early in the season, I think John Chavis has been absolutely outstanding over the course of 14 seasons.
