we were pretty fortunate in that game as well.

Matt Mauk dropped back and threw the ball directly to a linebacker for ut. he has a pick six all the way. He makes the catch, game set match for us. He didn't and the rest is history.

it's all in how you want to pick and choose things.

I think he's a safe hire. Will consistently produce a decent enough D and apparently has no plans of being a head man anytime soon so you don't have to worry about starting the search process again in a few years. Meh

Ever since we came back against them in the SECCG (2001?), I've not been overly impressed with him. We literally won that game using ONE play, and they absolutely could not adjust. That kind of shite scares me.

I don't think you can accurately judge a Coordinator with that narrow of a focus.

That same team pretty much shut us down in the regular season defensively. Which is more impressive? Which is more meaningful?

I'm a walker first guy.

You are right, chavis is a safe hire. I really don't think you could go wrong with walker, chavis, tenuta, edwards, ect.

i'm not so much on which style they run. i'm a guy who really doesn't care what they run as long as what they run is effective.

steeler type of 3/4, tampa two, eagle 4/3, buddy ryan 56. Just doesn't matter. Just get the job done.

yeah, Miles seems really caught up in hiring coordinators who won't want to leave. I'd prefer to have to find a new "best" every few years, but that's just me.

I think I would have preferred Koenning to Chavis to be honest.

if O is not a part of this package I'll be pretty disappointed with the process

agreed.
getting o softens the blow of not getting walker.

that said its not like chavis is a terrible hire, he's prolly the safest hire of the names that have been mentioned.

Disappointed with the "process"???? Blasphemy. Haven't we learned from the second coming of God in the form of man that it is all about the process (relative to climbing the mountain that gets more slippery as you get closer to the top). Get rid of your brook-trout look and fear the process, aight?

It's not even clear that Miles was talking to Walker...or that Walker was interested.

I do agree that Orgeron is a great addition...but Chavis puts us right back where we were prior to this year, IMO.

I think Chavis is the safe hire, but I have to admit that I really don't like it. I'd rather him than what we currently have, but I don't want a guy who may be falling behind the times in the SEC. Coaching styles have changed and I don't know if he changed with them.

I'd rather get a guy on his way up who will bring lots of potential to the team, even if we have to hire a new DC every three to four years.

But, it's still a step up from this past year.

Don't like Chavis pick at all. I'll take O though.

I disagree with this. He brought Pelini in knowing that he wanted to be a head coach. I also believe that Miles recommends his staff for "step up" positions elsewhere if that's what they want to do (or even if they're being pushed out like this year).

Also, Miles doesn't have the ego to have to have a public blood-letting if things do not work out. He handles things much more subtly.

he had the number two defense in the SEC this year.
im not saying i am totally for this hire, but to say he's falling behind is inaccurate.
its like the guy said earlier, hes has a good defense every third year.

without a doubt, but im just saying inconsistency seems to be his problem, not falling behind the times.

Agreed. I think UT falling behind in recruiting over the past few years may have more to do with this as well.

I think Miles is looking for a combo of "known" coordinator and someone who would stick around for awhile. I think thats why he went with the Co-DC last year, hoping that they would have success and 1 or both would be around long-term.
At the time he hired Pelini, he was a slam-dunk and it was just what he needed to make a splash as the new HC.

So Chavis is safe- he obviously doesnt want an HC gig, and his defenses will be solid, and at times spectacular.

O is the wild card: while I'd rather him be here than TN for recruiting purposes, is he going to cause trouble on the staff?

What's wrong with getting a DC that wants a HC gig? Miles can use that as a major selling point to attract the best coordinators.
