We were thinking about a summer vacation to North Dakota.
We loved South Dakota(badlands/Rushmore/deadwood etc). Went about 5 years ago.
Anyone been? Thoughts experiences yay or nay?

South Dakota is fun. North Dakota not so much.

Been to North Dakota often. State motto could be: "Miles and Miles of Miles and Miles".
I once read it was the least visited of the 50 states.

What's your plan to do there? Less "hot spots" ND as SD right?

Don't fall asleep in North Dakota with you shoes on, its illegal. So is dancing inside with a hat on.

We were just trying to think outside the box for vacation destinations. We know it’s one of the least vacationed states, but wanted to hear thoughts on it.
We may end up going to sleeping bear dunes in Michigan instead

Nice spot. I was there back in September and enjoyed the area. From about an hour south of there to all the way north to the Mackinaw Bridge is a beautiful area. You probably won’t need more than a half day at the dunes, so research other attractions and activities.
.....
The most scenic area in North Dakota is the SW corner, just north of the Black Hills of SD. Best way to visit ND is also including Theodore Roosevelt NP with Black Hills / Badlands or when doing a cross country road trip. I’ve heard I-94 is a more pleasant/ scenic drive than I-90 through South Dakota.

It’s been a while but Teddy Roosevelt national park was nice scenery and bison roaming.
Small town North Dakota is also nice. I enjoy driving through farm and ranch country so that may not be for everyone.

TR National Park is nice but I am not sure it is more than 2-3 day type of trip. Everything in ND is so spread out, maybe you could combo TR with Montana or Wyoming. Wish I could have some better advice but I rarely drive west of Cass County unless I am going to Montana to ski.
That said, ND is great if you want to take a trip to hunt or fish. Some really good golf in western ND as well.

Ha, ok I hear you. Look I’m all about going to non touristy spots so I wasn’t hating. Anywhere there’s a lake, national forest, mountains, river, etc is plenty enough for a couple days or week vacation.
