Did the Russians just back the ruble to gold?

Some interesting thoughts and perspective here. Maybe the economists on the board can weigh in as to the veracity of the timeline and implications of Russia going with gold-backed currency and selling oil in gold.
Meanwhile, domestically, we are worried about slaps, trans parties, carbon footprints, and ice cream. It feels like the rest of the world is playing chess while we are playing tiddly winks.

Something like 90% of the gold in Europe come from Russia and they have the largest mineable gold reserves in the world

I don't know what's going on, but over the past week or so the ruble has gained a ton against the dollar.
I know the ruble lost a lot of value to the dollar right after they invaded, but it's storming back in a hurry.

I can't see how this works out when purchasing countries or crude oil purchasers run out of gold. Maybe take a look at how much gold European countries have in reserve.

If a big country could do this it is Russia. The US could never pull it off, not in its current form. There isn't enough gold available to match the dollars. The pay out would have to be so ridiculously low that the dollar would actually be worthless.
