If the 2004 Yankees didn't choke, could they have beaten the Cardinals in the WS?

I look back at that 2004 Yankees team and I say how the hell did they lose to the Red Sox?
Jeter, A-Rod, Sheffield, Matsui?

I remember that Cardinals team being really good. Once the Sox beat the Yankees they were just riding a wave.
Yankees/Cardinals probably would have been a long series.

The Yankees wouldn't have swept the Cardinals since they wouldn't have had the horseshoe up the arse that the Red Sox had going into that WS, but they would've beaten them in 5 or 6.

It's tough to say. It probably would have taken 6-7 games to determine a winner that year. The Yankees rotation that year wasn't very formidable. But the Cardinals wasn't much better. And Carpenter got hurt 2 weeks before the playoffs. And didn't pitch the rest of the season. It would have been a high scoring World Series.

I mean, the Cards got swept, so obviously the Yankees would have stood a good chance.
Losing Carpenter at the end of the season was a killer for St. Louis. None of their other starters could throw the ball by anyone, and Sox hitters just ground them down AB after AB. Yankee hitters walked even more than Boston that season and struck out a lot less, so that part likely would have gone pretty similarly, but I think Cardinal hitters would have had more success against NY. Cards lineup was pretty stacked.

2004 NYY lineup was filthy:
Jorge Posada
Tony Clark/Jason Giambi 1B
Miguel Cairo, 2B
Derek Jeter, SS
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Hideki Matsui, LF
Bernie Williams, CF
Gary Sheffield, RF
Rubén Sierra, DH
Bench:
Kenny Lofton
Enrique Wilson
John Olerud
John Flaherty
Bubba Crosby
Their SP really missed Clemens and Petitte, though:
Javier Vázquez
Jon Lieber
Mike Mussina
Kevin Brown
José Contreras
Orlando Hernandez
Brad Halsey
Amzingly, the 2003 team that lost to the Marlins in the WS was probably the better team.

Could they? Absolutely

Both teams were pretty evenly matched. MV3 was so fun to watch that year.

The Cardinals won 105 games that year if memory serves me correctly.
There was no stopping the Red Sox though. They were white hot.

Damn you, Jim Edmonds. That '04 Astros team was better than the '05 one IMO, but like it was mentioned, no one was beating Boston. Not even a team with Carlos Beltran who played out of his mind that postseason.

Underrated series. That was a great NLCS.

In hindsight they really should have resigned kent instead of the pipe dreaming for Beltran

You are correct. Cardinals were a very good team. Schilling, Pedro, and Lowe were lights out in Games 2-4. I think the Yankees could have beaten the Cardinals but not certain. Would have been a competitive series. But yeah, no one was beating Boston. Especially with those three pitching like they did in the World Series.
